May 26, 201115 yr Hello, I recently found a website designer here on the forum. He was very quick and did a good job in regards to the design and layout. Today I haven't had any hits which is strange as I have been getting 15 - 25 a day. I checked the website and it is returning a HTTP 404 error. From what I have read this error is due to the website being deleted. I have contacted the designer and he said it is a problem with the hosting company. I am paying for google adwords which is costing me approx £5 a day so I am not particularly happy that the site is down. Is there any other reason this error would be given, should I be concerned?
May 26, 201115 yr It means the files are either a: not there, or b: you have mistyped the address You should be worried! Edited May 26, 201115 yr by Blofeld

May 26, 201115 yr Author Is it any benefit to the designer to remove the site? He said that the host was down and that his website was with the same hosting company however his website was not down.
May 26, 201115 yr The site isn't returning a 404 here, it just doesn't show up at all. Silly question, but you did pay the guy for the site yeah? So no chance he has taken it down over payment dispute? Do you know what company hosts the site?
May 26, 201115 yr If it just went live today and the hosting company had a problem and had to roll back to an earlier backup point it would explain it being gone. Otherwise, someone has deleted it or messed with your DNS
May 26, 201115 yr Author No problem with payment, I paid 50% before work started and 50% after it was complete. The site has been up for 3-4 weeks. So didn't go live today. I have no access to anything like ftp, cpanel, or host. Is there anyway I can stop this from happening in the future?

Or can't access due to the above mentioned issue?
May 26, 201115 yr Author cwqtrading is me. The website designer is (removed) A decent guy and did a very good job, I just dont understand why the site has disappeared. Edited May 26, 201115 yr by chriswquinn
May 26, 201115 yr erm...I don't actually get a 404 error. I get "can't connect to server" which tells me that the server is down
May 26, 201115 yr Your webhosts system status page is showing a general error: http://www.webfusion.co.uk/support/system-status/ That's likely to be the cause.

May 26, 201115 yr I suggest you remove the designers link from your post if he did a good job. Don't want him showing up in searches regarding problems if it wasn't his fault.
May 26, 201115 yr Spitfire seems to have found the issue. The designer seems pretty talented tbh. Bookmarked.
May 26, 201115 yr Author Thank you spitfire, so this isn't something I should worry about and isn't likely to happen again in the future?
May 26, 201115 yr Thank you spitfire, so this isn't something I should worry about and isn't likely to happen again in the future? No guarantees that there won't be server issues in the future, no web host can guarantee this. Sometimes it just happens. Webfusion are normally pretty OK.
May 26, 201115 yr Author He is very good, sorry didn't even think about linking the URL. I just couldn't understand what was wrong and wanted a second opinion. The guy is out of the country and I couldn't reach him. One more quick question how do I + his reputation?
May 27, 201115 yr Author Hello, my site is still down and the link spitfire posted shows no known faults. I have tried calling the designer and emailing him but have had no response. I am getting increasingly worried, thankfully I have paid via paypal but I only have a week to put in a claim which I would really rather not do. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Christopher

Thank you Christopher What worrys me is, if he had a reseller account that has now expired, your best bet would be to contact webfusion direct and ask about your domain
May 27, 201115 yr I'd go with it being a web fusion problem, i can only access their site intermittently.
May 27, 201115 yr I'd go with it being a web fusion problem, i can only access their site intermittently. Taken from a server status Server Status for www.aeir.co.uk : HTTP: Website is either loading slow or offline. FTP: There seems to be a problem connecting to FTP MAIL (Pop3): There seems to be a problem with the Pop3 MAIL (SMTP): Failed connecting to SMTP MySQL: The MySQL seems to be offline.
May 27, 201115 yr Author Thanks Mike & Pat. OK, just off the phone with web fusion. The site isn't being hosted with them, it is being pointed to intelliserve.org. They are based out in Moldova and advertise them self as the cheapest hosting company. Their site is currently down, would it make sense to transfer it back to web fusion so as to avoid this happening again? Thanks for all your help. Edited May 27, 201115 yr by chriswquinn
May 27, 201115 yr Hers is webfusion 24hr support line no 0845 130 1602 option 3. update Server Status for aeir.co.uk: HTTP: Website is either loading slow or offline. FTP: Connected to the FTP! May 27, 201115 yr Author Hi Pat, My email seems to be working fine. I am currently holding to speak to someone at intelliserve. Hopefully they will have some good news. Do you know if this is a good hosting company or should I change for web fusion?

Do you know if this is a good hosting company or should I change for web fusion? I cant tell you about intelliserve.org as I know nothing about them, I do know webfusion are a good company from what I have read, if I were you I would transfer my hosting, if this is possible for you to do
May 27, 201115 yr Author From what I can understand I will need to wait until the site becomes available again and then transfer it. I am just glad I now understand the problem. Thank you all for your help.
May 28, 201115 yr Author One more quick question while there are so many members viewing the topic, is £440 for 4 pages including CMS good value for money?
May 28, 201115 yr One more quick question while there are so many members viewing the topic, is £440 for 4 pages including CMS good value for money? Probably. But depends on what CMS it is, and how complicated the pages are (as in there's a difference between "Hello World" and a very busy, cross browser compliant, complicated CSS juggling type page with loads of custom made graphics and stuff).
May 28, 201115 yr One more quick question while there are so many members viewing the topic, is £440 for 4 pages including CMS good value for money? As Gibson said, it all depends on how the site is built. Does it work in all the major browsers? Is it w3c valid? Does it have a custom-made logo? How much 'on-page' SEO work has been done to give it a kick start in the SERP's? £440 isn't expensive for a 4 page site with CMS in general.

Just had a look at the site The code seems ok, the meta tags are blank, but that could be an option he has got in the cms for you to complete. Nice to see the site is back up
May 28, 201115 yr Just ran the site through the w3c validator and comes up with 8 errors. Nothing major, and some people don't give a flying frog about it anyways lol. Here's the link if you're interested http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aeir.co.uk%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0 The site seems a little bland to be honest, layout is ok. It just feels like it isn't quite there yet.
