Hey all!

 

I currently host myself and clients on a trusted vps in america with full support etc for around £31 a month (60GB Disk Space // 768MB Ram // 1TB Bandwidth // Full Nightly Backups // Fullly Managed and cpanel/WHM) and may setup whmcs with it but I am looking into a uk host, can anybody recommend me anybody? heart internet looked interesting but they want £100 a year for custom name servers and they say £30 but when you go to pay for it it becomes £36 and I thought that to be a bit of a rip off.

Hi Matthew,

 

Welcome to the forums. There are quite a lot of reviews of HeartInternet on these forums, but £100 for custom nameservers is a bit extreme, as they wont incur any charges for issuing you custom nameservers. Most other web hosting companies wont charge you for custom nameservers as this should be something you'd expect to be free with a Reseller or a VPS hosting package.

I have been dealing with hosting for years now (shared, reseller vps and dedicated servers) and not once have I seen you having to pay for your own nameservers, I know you can do your own nameserves if you know the servers ip but It looks like I'm best to stick to my usa vps as it seems you have to pay more for the uk as we dont have many data centers.

 

I just wished they would tell you everything and display the proper price on the website before you sign up to make an account getting ready to place an order.

I just got off the live chat and they said

"As creating custom nameservers is manual work for our admin team, we have to charge this amount I'm afraid."

 

Is there anybody else?

Assuming given the specs you quoted that your using hardly any resources for your websites, have you considered moving to a UK reseller account, as a VPS really is more of a development platform than an upgrade path from shared.

 

I know pretty much EVERY host pushes VPS's as upgrades from shared, and many may join in here and tell you we are wrong, but to have a servers CPU's/Memory and more importantly, Disk I/O split between multiple operating systems as well as the websites is really not an imporvement over shared/reseller servers where there is 1 O/S and then the websites.

 

VPS servers are so much busier with most hosting 8 to 16 VPS's, then all the resource management/monitoring going on too, whereas that same hardware running just 1 O/S and the websites its service performs so much better, so maybe thats a better option for you?

 

Problem is, finding a reseller host that doesnt oversell, then have endless T&C's to lay down all the ways you can use what you pay for.

 

We had a chat about this recently with another host and they define server abuse as "1% resource usage for 1 minute" which is bonkers, and despite having drupal logos and advertising all over their website, their servers wont even allow a drupal install due to only having 64mb of shared memory...

 

It can be a minefield...

 

I'll get shot down now for saying all this about VPS's lol.....

Its still true though.... VPS's are designed for functionality, not performance.

Yep, Wesh is correct. VPS's are very much restricted in terms of I/O operations, so you often find Reseller packages can perform a lot better, providing the web hosting company hasn't oversold them.

I am hardly using any yes but I run a few wordpress websites as I host a few clients, and the spec I got on the servers and for the price, is very good and going by having a look around a bargin! but as much as there support is good and it seems like everything is great I just wanted to try something closer to home lol.

I give it to them though it is the quickest vps I have been on, and support gets back to you within 10mins and any problem is fixed very quickly but again I wanted something from the uk and for heart internet to add on £10 to the £30 I save by staying where I am even If paid for unbranded whmcs and lightspeed web server... and for a host to define server abuse as "1% resource usage for 1 minute" is NUTS! and 64mb ram is outrageous!

If are looking for quality service in UK you will have to pay a bit more thats for sure. You wont get cheap VPS as in US.

 

So I will suggest you to first shortlist few host chat with there support and clear things regarding price and your requirement before you decide to go with any particular host.

 

Make sure you read there reviews a well.

Thanks, yeh I noticed your never get as great deals as you can do in the usa or even sometimes france.. I would happily go to heart internet after thinking about it but I couldn't get my debit card to link up lol..

There are several companies out there who offer managed services free along with their dedicated servers or vps's. Try searching for a company who specializes in it and hav been doing it for years with positive feedback from clients on web... I am aware sometimes people prefer to manage their own servers.. But when your company is offering it free of cost, why not utilize their skills to have your server managed and monitored 24/7.

There are people in the uk who do so but they cost more and offer less spec then what I have now, making more sense to keep hosted in the US.
