March 12, 201115 yr I was speaking to a chap the other day that I stumbled upon when I did a google search - his site was ranked 3rd. We got chatting and he told me that he helped out a microsoft engineer that works for google and the guy returned the favour and gave him some help in getting his site to the top of google search and he receives on average 50 enquiries a day. For our industry that's very good indeed but here's the thing he said to me (assuming I believe him - I have no reason not to) that the site was built in 2 days and he was at the top on day 3. I asked for this guys number and he said no lol. I looked at his source code and didn't really see anything in there that I wouldn't include in my own site once its finished and I also did a back link search on yahoo and it said only 3 sites linked to his one of which was a telephone directory (I may have done that yahoo search wrong by the way). He also said that at any time he can call this guy if he's to busy and he will drop him down the search rankings and likewise when it needs turning back on it can be done in an instant. What sort of magic is this? Doesn't this make a bit of a mockery of SEO strategies if someone can get their site to the top for a particular search term so quickly AND turn it on and off like a tap - I mean what could you do to have such an immediate influence?
March 12, 201115 yr I mean what could you do to have such an immediate influence? money. I'm sure Google have some overrides to normal algorithms for obvious (sponsored) payments and whenever they feel like it. Then again have you seen proof of what this guy told you? I can't imagine an MS engineer having that level of access to Google's system?
March 12, 201115 yr Author money. I'm sure Google have some overrides to normal algorithms for obvious (sponsored) payments and whenever they feel like it. Then again have you seen proof of what this guy told you? I can't imagine an MS engineer having that level of access to Google's system? Proof in as much as I have searched his site and found it at the top - the search term i used was 'right to by adverse credit' and the site is here saying thats total BS is being nice... LOL maybe so but he seems genuine to me and would have no reason to lie to me. Who knows.
March 12, 201115 yr ok... well i don't see there website on the serp... maybe your getting personalized results? also the term "right to by adverse credit" is a long tail term and would be very easy to rank for anyway so a few days is no shock...

Sugar sorry the term is actually 'right to buy adverse credit'
March 12, 201115 yr I've always thought it was fishy that brands seem to get their websites to the top rank in such a short space of time. One that I noticed was very new Nike websites. Similarly Buzz.com (competitor to Google's Buzz (I think)) is below Google's Buzz. Last time I looked Buzz.com was on page 3, but they seem to have risen. Totally Google's right to artificially influence pagerank though. Edited March 12, 201115 yr by pea
March 12, 201115 yr Author Totally Google's right to artificially influence pagerank though. That doesn't seem so fair. Its basically saying that even if you are a master SEO practitioner someone at google can simply flick a switch and undo all your hard work.
March 12, 201115 yr would just like to say google don't artificially increase rank-ability outside of the algorithms already in place... what i mean is just because someone understands how to market a website doesn't provide any evidence of any artificial action from google... doing so would be detrimental to the google eco-system... also them being rank 1 today is because you have clicked on their result... they are number 3 for me.

Thats a relief. also them being rank 1 today is because you have clicked on their result... they are number 3 for me. Didn't know that - I was hoping to monitor his sites movements over the coming weeks and months to see if he has made any changes to his sites code/content but that will make it a bit more tricky if my results are going to be influenced by my previous searches. Is there a way of telling google to ignore my recent activity? and display the results as if its the first time I have searched?
March 12, 201115 yr They have had personalized results since.... the caffeine update i think... dosnt matter if your signed in or not. http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?answer=54041 i use a install of Chromium for searching like you need to.... (not the google chrome version of chromium)
March 12, 201115 yr Author Yes, there is. Thanks, that did it although only after I signed out of google. In fact when I signed out of google it reverted back to the results I saw yesterday without even having to disable but disabled as well to be on the safe side.
March 18, 201115 yr Many long-time SEO's are now looking at the big picture and working with usability analysts. Some SEO are scam artists. I find it interesting that so many newcomers are given the wrong impression that there is one almighty answer to doing well in search engines. SEO are specialized techniques used to optimize your web site, to be Search engine friendly and increase your chances of placing well in searches. But SEO can also be the most profitable methods of driving leads because any leads you receive from SEO are free leads. Edited July 27, 201115 yr by MikeChipshop
March 18, 201115 yr The fact they are 3rd in the SERP's isn't surprising, look at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and type in the keyword and press search. There is no search volume data for this keyword in the last month, and there is no information regarding competition. I can't stress how easy it is to rank for such a keyword. However, the whole 'ranking in 3 days'. There could be some factors that did this, such as having the domain for a while, already having a few backlinks. But i'm clutching at straws and find it gobsmacking that this would be done as a 'favour'. In terms of huge brans like Nike, thats fine. They have a huge authority, and anyone that googles for 'Nike trainers' would find it weird if a spammy little site was above nike in the SERP's. It's been known for a while that Google favour brands like nike, adidas and so on. And why not? They're a trusted and verified site, and more likely to be relevant for certain keywords. April 28, 201115 yr where are the moderators on this forum. Look at all the spammy crap in this thread and it still remains. Are they afraid of doing anything about the spam? And how can people that just joined have a link, I thought this had been sorted out or have they found that if they edit the post after posting it they can add a link? Ban IP's now or you won't have a forum left.

July 27, 201115 yr Author Why is it unfair. It's Google's website, they can include/exclude whoever they want. You have no room in the least to moan as it's totally free. What?!? Maybe unfair is the wrong word but to say that Google can put whomever they like in whichever position they like is madness. Google has built a reputation for being exactly the opposite of that so if you found out now that they were artificially influencing SERPs I for one would be pretty pssd off and yes if Google has the right to include/exclude whoever they want then I have the right to moan about it.

July 27, 201115 yr Author My point is that I feel that Google intentions are well placed and their aim is to promote the best content for its users and to suggest that Google can put whoever they like at the top of the results page doesn't do them any justice. For example I don't feel they they could intentionally put a website that they know had copied the content from a different site ahead of the site that had the original material all other things remaining equal of course. To suggest that they can put whatever wherever they like and that no one has the right to say anything against that is dictatorial and that just isn't Google is it? I'm not suggesting they should list any old crud I'm simply saying they shouldn't exclude a site that has played by the rules or promote a site artificially. If they did and it was known they would soon start to lose users. For the record I don't think this happens but the discussion remains all the same and its interesting to hear others views.
July 27, 201115 yr oh... were on the same page i think people get confused in general about artificial manipulation as it were... not saying you just in general... they can knock websites out via the web spam team but most of it is done automatically algorithmically with a handful done by manual review.... i think that factor might give people who don’t know much about how they operate the impression they give preference to some websites Edited July 27, 201115 yr by SniderDK
