This seems like the best place to be asking this.

 

I'm looking to find out how you developers/designers host and manage small to medium sized sites.

 

- Do you use a CMS?

- Do you create the site using static/dymanic files arranged in folders?

- Have you created your own custom framework/mini CMS?

 

I ask because I've used all three and this has lead me down the road to creating my own CMS which I plan to open up and sell in the next few months. I've had enough with having to start from scratch each time, adapt old code, or theme sites from scratch.

My CMS project will allow users to have full access to their site's html, be extremely easy to use and require very minimal setup. I haven't found this elsewhere so I decided to create it from scratch.

 

I'd really appreciate any feedback as this would help massively.

Come on guys, I'd love to hear your take on this!

It really depends what the site is for and what the client wants from it. Some clients want the ability to update and some wish me to create it and then will occasionally employ me to update it because they can't face the idea or they need more than a CMS can offer or they can afford.

 

I have not created my own CMS as there are so many great ones (many free) out there that do the job. However i would be interested in creating one just for fun.

There's a lot of CMS's out there already. I think you would need to offer something quite unique - and free.

I've got a few unique services lined up, just need to find some more time to get coding!

Yes. I like to use my own CMS. Previously I used Wordpress. Still part of my site uses WP. But soon moving away from it.

The data stored in database. Performance is improved by cache function. All content is divided based on topic into folders.

 

- Have you created your own custom framework/mini CMS?

 

I use my own CMS script for my sites. (it is free)

Um. Before you go rolling your own, have you tried Wolf? It's basically a PHP port of Radiant, works really well for small sites.

Wolf looks pretty interesting, I'm definitely perusing my own though
