January 12, 201115 yr Ok, ive designed my website at home, i go to take it into college to work on it, i have tested this code on multiple browsers at home, mozzila firefox, chrome and IE. But i get into college, go to view the page, and its all messed up, well not exactly all... Here is what i mean, This is a screenshot of it on the college computer. But here its putting it part of the contentright div when that div tag is closed. The college computers are running on IE7 if that makes any difference. Unless by "not proper" you mean he didn't use tables........ I really hope you don't mean that @Beer Huntor, I havent tested your site as its 5am and ima go sleep, but ill tell you this, HR tags never work exactly as intended in all browsers unless you do alot of work arounds. ditch the hr and replace it with a <div class="hr"></div>. give the div a border-top and height of 0px. then overflow:hidden and your golden i would help more... but 5am..

The code you've written does have several errors in it, I mean officially and somewhat unofficially. Officially there's 204 errors - you can check via http://validator.w3.org. On top of those errors, realistically you really should not be using: <hr> tags inline CSS images as navigation links the <b> tag chunks of capital letters the p 'align' attribute To correct you on each of the above: style a thin <div> take out of the page and put into the stylesheet include use background images, with semantic text over the top, add 'title' attributes to <a> elements use <strong> use text-transform:uppercase; in the CSS use text-align:left/right/center; in the CSS You haven't exactly explained what's wrong with the layout, but fixing some of that may help you. I'd suggest starting with the 204 validation errors - it sounds like a lot, but you can get them fixed in a matter of minutes. I haven't gone through your CSS yet, but it looks good at a glance. PS. If i didnt already think that i wouldnt be coming here for help would I. And instead of slating my coding and telling me what I have done wrong. Lets start by saying why its wrong. I mean come on computer genuis's such as yourself should realise that by looking at my code, you can tell that im not experienced, as you like to keep pointing out. Thats the problem, they are not part of the contentright div. They are suppose to be part of the content div, which they are when viewed at home on IE, FF and chrome, but when viewed on the college computer that runs IE7 it becomes part of contentright for some reason. Is it the way that IE 7 reads the code?

The Transitional doctype is supposed to get rid of the error notice but it doesn't seem to do that in this case. The main reason all your blue horizontal lines were in the wrong place was that the hr tag needed clear: both; to stop them riding up over the floated content above. You had a mixture of HTML and XHTML coding so I found it quicker to change the doctype which meant fewer edits elsewhere. you really should not be using: * images as navigation links To correct you on each of the above: * use background images, with semantic text over the top, add 'title' attributes to <a> elements Who said that i cant use images as navagation links? If it aint broke dont fix it! The reason is because blind people can't see image links so they can't navigate. I'm not being funny. Blind people need another way to navigate a website. If you use img tags for links without text links, use title="..." so that a screen reader can read out the link (this is in addition to the alt which is for use when an image doesn't load), or use text-indent described below. If you use a background-image for a link with no link text, you should add the link text with text-indent: -9999px to throw it off-screen to the left where you can't see it but a screen reader will still read it. Even if you think you website will never be visited by a blind person, you should do the above. In my version of your page I've used the text-indent for the Home button and title="..." for the others, so you see the ugly tooltip in Firefox for the others but not for the Home button which you may find preferable. The Transitional doctype is supposed to get rid of the error notice but it doesn't seem to do that in this case. The main reason all your blue horizontal lines were in the wrong place was that the hr tag needed clear: both; to stop them riding up over the floated content above. And instead of slating my coding and telling me what I have done wrong. Lets start by saying why its wrong. I mean come on computer genuis's such as yourself should realise that by looking at my code, you can tell that im not experienced, as you like to keep pointing out. I gave you a link to a website which told you exactly what's wrong, and then I listed some other potential problems and their fix. That's pretty much all I can do without doing it all for you. Im sorry you felt that way, it was more of a collective statement than directed at yourself, as after all you did help me more than others, I just get abit pissed off when people think that they are better than you and wont go out of there way to help. And on that particular day i seemed to be getting alot of that, with people more than happy to say what im doing wrong, but failing to explain why and what i could do to correct it. It is a legal requirement to code websites to be accessible to people with disabilities, read this if you are interested:- http://www.webcredible.co.uk/user-friendly-resources/web-accessibility/uk-website-legal-requirements.shtml However, there are a lot of ifs and buts and mights so it's unlikely that you would be sued, but the article does say that a blind man successfully sued the Sydney Olympics organising committee. It is much more likely that you would be sued if your site was for a large company with a form to buy a product like an airline ticket than a site for your friends. However, there might be blind people interested to read about people on your website and want to navigate the site to read about the Club History with a screen reader, even if they can't see the images. So it's a good idea to get into the habit of coding accessibility features where possible. I doubt if any of us do it as well as the big company sites are forced to do it.
