Want to learn PHP

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

My freind wants to start an advertising site. He is confident in my design and SEO ability, however it wont be enough. I need to master PHP (or asp, but I figure PHP is the way forward). I have zero coding skills and dont even do my websites by typing raw code. I am just getting my head round CSS, how foolish would I be to start on learning PHP?

Can you suggest where I start? Maybe any books that would take me from zero to php hero in a matter of months?

Please advise.

Kind Regards

If you are still just learning css/html im not sure how wise it would be to jump into php/mysql but a place that is good to start with is w3schools

Maybe a good thing to do is to get your head around a cms, before learning php as it will do most of the hard work for you if you are creating a dynamic site. I can recommend wordpress for blog style sites, cmsms for simple brochure sites and drupal for larger sites. That being said, learning the basics of php is a must if you want to progress!

Hi there,

Well done taking the leap to learn PHP. I use the website Lynda.com, they provide a wealth of video tutorials on lots of technical coding and seo and loads lol. Have a look btw im not an affiliate for them lol :p.

Look at there tut on PHP with mySQL - Essentials and PHP with mySQL - Beyond the Basics then you'll be a hero lol.

Wish you all the best.

As long as you feel confident with HTML/CSS and can at least put a basic structure in place then starting to learn PHP along side wouldn't be to much of a strain.

However if your not that confident on HTML/CSS then doing it all at once could lead to a "Jack of all trades, master of none" situation but you should at least be able to build a functional site.

As many have said on here, search for tutorials on Google. W3Schools have some great beginners tutorials, maybe even pop down the local library and see if they have anything lying about that might help.

It's great that you have a project that you can start messing around with as this will help you get a firm grasp of the basics.

Have fun and don't let it frustrate you to much ;)
