Google's NEW SEO Guide

Featured Replies

Google Published this SEO 'starters guide' (pdf) today. It is full of great tips, some most of us will know, there were a few hidden gems I found interesting re:mobile sites.

I suggest this gets pinned here - as it covers A LOT of the questions we get here regularly.

Their guide tells us not to link build.... but link building is the donkey work which gets a site to page one. Google confuse me.

I quote from the pdf:

Link building is very common practice :)

I think they just don't want to encourage people to link build, and for all links to be natural. But its one thing they find difficult to control, because how can they tell the difference!

The problem with "link-building" is if you BUY linkbuilding services its usually a con/spam.

If you buy into a marketing service where you seed content to influential people and create great content that makes people a) want to buy or B) share then the links will build themselves much more naturally. (and they will get seen, AND clicked)

Your right there. Links on over abused sites with too many links per page are virtually worthless!

There are a lot of link building services which aren't scams, as you only pay on results or after seeing the verified links. The same can be said about content creation. Actually I'm a bit lost as to why you said this.

This content creation/marketing seems like much more of a scam to me as it is a lot harder to predict results. Great content is expensive and you can't predict if it will be loved, and naturally normally means a long time. This means a client can be paying for months of faith.

Whereas manually link building you can predict the quantity of links, time involved and time frame to get the the 1st page of Google for a keyword.

And Neil, look at the top results for christian louboutin, and see http://www.louboutin-x.com/ they are a couple of months old, but on the 1st page for a very competitive keyword, now look at their link profile. 1000s of links from your so called abused sites, this is just one example of these links working.

I didn't mean to cause any offence. My point is that some backlinks are worth more than others and if you have a superior website it maybe easier to get to a higher position in Google with fewer quality backlinks than thousands of no so great ones. However if a company is unable to offer a superior site then buying a SEO service maybe the way to go!

LOL, sorry Neil. No offense taken, I'm trying to not be aggressive in my posts but I think I'm too direct still.fool.gif

I agree that some links are worth more than others, but this doesn't mean any link that isn't from the homepage of some popular blog or whatever isn't still valuable. A link on a PR 8 blog post with 100 extenal links will still be more valuable than a PR 1 post with 0 external links. A nofollow link on some PR n/a blog will help diversify a link profile. Link from article sites and spammy directories (ie not industry specific ones like yours) all have a place to play and it seems to me that most advice against all of these is just a tactic for getting more money out of a client for longer time.

So I'm just saying that Google is a huge hypocrit, they rank sites according to link profiles (ok not 100% but at least 30%) but they say don't engage in link building schemes.... If you want good rankings and to make money ignore this and do the oposite.
