Having trouble with the omega symbol!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Im very new to using Illustrator but ive been playing around a bit and watch youtube vids etc but im having real trouble getting anything 3D to look good, im trying to get the omega symbol in 3D so i can change the colour on the sides etc making them different from the front, also making stuff like shiny too, how do you make a circle look round?

Also with text, how do you get a reflection of the text under the original text?

I can find photoshop tutorials for stuff like this but not much for illustrator.

Any help would be great.

Cheers

Shawn

To make the Omega symbol 3D:-

1) Select the symbol, and go to Effect > 3D > Extrude & Bevel.

2) Play around with the options and use the Preview checkbox to get it to look how you want it.

3) Click OK when you're happy.

4) With the object still selected, go to Object > Expand Appearance.

5) Right click on the object and select Ungroup.

6) You can then select the individual faces of the object to change their colour etc.

Text with reflection:-

1) Type the text.

2) With the text selected, press Ctrl/Cmd + C, then Ctrl/Cmd + F (which will copy and paste in front).

3) Rotate the text to where you want it, and then apply a Gradient using the Gradient panel (Window > Gradient).

Making a circle look spherical:-

1) Draw your circle.

2) Using the Gradient *tool* (not the Gradient panel), draw a gradient across the circle. Then go to the Gradient panel to select and edit the Gradient colours. You can move the Gradient about using the handles of the Gradient tool to get it to look how you want it.

G'luck!

Agreed with BlueDreamer - that, or you can try drawing one yourself by combining some shapes/using the pen tool. It's a pretty simple basic shape, can't be that hard!
