Hosting advice

Featured Replies

Hi just built a simple page for my sister to show off her art work. She has her domain mane and said she could get hosting for £2.50 per month or something, which I know isn't a great deal but thought i'd ask if there were any alternatives as we only need a little space.

Appreciate any replies

Hi Jason,

I can provided you with hosting for free.

If your interested.

Let me know.

Regards,

I'd suggest Byethost for free hosting. By far the most generous I've come across (and they have no ads):

  • 5GB disk space
  • 200GB monthly bandwidth
  • 50 domains/add-ons/subs
  • 50 MySQL databases
  • phpMyAdmin
  • Unlimited email accounts, webmail etc.

I have countless accounts with them - they're the cheapest hosting company I've ever come across (well, I believe they're resellers). I know this isn't necessarily the best, but for a portfolio website, off-shore, shared servers should be fine.

You will need to buy your domain separately and use the add-on domain feature.

yeah? Would be very interested in that buddy. How does it work?

Thanks

Nice one Andy - You get all that for free? When you say this isn't necessarily the best what are the disadvantages?

Thanks for the detailed post buddy

Sign-up and you're good to go immediately: Byethost Free Hosting.

Though I assume your response was to Michael ;)

ha ha yes but useful as per above! :good:

It's all 100% free. I know, it's crazy - but in the US these things don't cost anything like what they do here. Disadvantages include:

  • UK domain and US server - Google will - very lightly - penalise you. As I said, not really a worry for a portfolio site.
  • Since it's free hosting - it will be slower than paid, though I've never been dissatisfied (or noticed a difference - I host on their paid plan now).
  • You won't get cPanel - it's vPanel for free hosting plans. Still just as useful though.

Not necessarily disadvantages for a portfolio website - perhaps for a business website.

Thanks again Andy I have registered to take a bit of a look but seem to be getting stuck trying to add a domain i purchased elsewhere. It says in the tutorial to change the name servers but doesn't say how to do it.

I've sent you a PM so just reply to that and i will set it up for you.

Regards,

Will I get FTP log in access etc? I'm very new to web design so excuse my ignorance if thats a silly question. Do you have a website set up for this?

Yes you will get FTP details.

Website setup for what exactly? Web hosting?

I recommend you be cautious about free offers - it'll either be full with ads, or it'll disappear sometime next week. It's also very vulnerable as it's open to anyone who wants a free account, so it can have its consequences.

Ok, login to wherever you've registered your domain and go to 'Change nameservers'.

Set your nameservers to:

ns1.byet.org
ns2.byet.org
ns3.byet.org
ns4.byet.org
ns5.byet.org

Now login to your free hosting account - http://panel.byethost.com - and go to 'Domains' -> 'Add-on Domains'. Now enter your domain in the form, in this format:

yourdomain.co.uk

Your FTP will show a new folder in the root (yourdomain.co.uk). Simply navigate into that folder, then htdocs and upload all your files to that htdocs folder.

Well looks like im going to be the first one to stay around.

Considering i have been setup for approx 3 months, and intent on stayin running for a long time then he has nothing to worry about.

I have a number of members on this forum hosting their sites on my server.

And the reason i am offering free hosting is becuase i like to help people who want to get there site out there.

When i get approached by people outside of this forum i charge, but as this is a forum, i want to help members out.

I wondered if you had a website that I can check out?

This is just a 1 page website may be 2. I guess as long as my files are backed up though its not the end of the world if they are gone in a weeks time right?

Well I've been using Byethost for well over 5 years now, and for free plans, I don't think they're going to run off *without* my money.

I use a paid plan now, but still regularly use free accounts there for various tests and to have another 5GB web space per account.

They don't have ads either - none - on free or paid accounts. They simply offer more than any other host I've come across. Yes, they're based in the US - but for my portfolio site and the site in this topic, that's not a real issue.

For their paid plans, they have premium support who are, probably, the best support team I've ever dealt with. They downgraded my paid plan to a cheaper one and refunded a month (I didn't ask for this) within about 30 minutes of my asking - no disputes, nothing.

A hidden gem you might say. If I were setting up a website which needed to reach the top of search engines for competitive keywords, I would indeed go to one of the hosting companies we have posting on here, such as yourself - purely to keep everything UK based.

I have sent you a PM with a number of sites.

Thanks Michael checked those out and they seem nice and quick and you are UK based right? I'm happy to support a fellow forum member and I really appreciate your kind offer!
