Hey I'm ringing round getting a few quotes for a site like thisto be built. Can someone tell me what I should be paying? I don't need any fancy graphics designing, I can do that myself, I just need the same framework.

this all depends who you ring.

 

If you are after someone who only uses free scripts like oscommerce, magento etc then you can pickup a web designer for between £300 and £500..

 

If you are looking for a website from a web design company who offer only top custom or quality paid scripts like aspdontnetstores its going to cost you more as it costs the web designer £800 so he will want his money back plus design, coding, implementing etc.

 

So for a quality solution i would say in the region of around £2000-£3000 plus hosting.

 

But as i say you can go with the first option, nothing wrong with them websites as they are both good scripts, just heavily coded and full of scripts most people do not want in the shopping cart.

This all depends upon you that whom you are ringing, for free scripts you call of a web designer,you pay less and for website from a web designing company and having paid scripts then you have to paid more.

Its all html templated so its not as hard to tweek.

Yes, I saw, you didn't want the design, you wanted the framework and that is what it is based on. £19.99 a month and you have the framework to build on yourself?

 

I guess it depends on what you mean by framework lol. If you just want a template of the layout then you have it on that site If you want the payment processing, the backend database, etc etc then somehow it's going to cost more

It depends on the project I'm afraid.

 

Let's say you've found a design you like, that's step 1. The developer has to take that design and make it work with either:

 

1) commercial cart- more expensive initially, but a lot less heartache for both you and the developer in the long run, since you will have customer support. Save £300 here and you could pay in hours of time to sort out a simple problem

2) free cart - common option, most people want to cut costs/corners and see this as an easy win. Really depends on the developers competence and skill with the cart in question.

3) bespoke e-commerce script - most expensive option, but easiest to tailor to your needs. Doesn't sound like you need this.

 

The design is a relatively small part of the task, the big job is making the cart match your inventory, issue secure payments etc.

 

You may well find people willing to work for under a grand - but you'll get what you pay for. Realistically, you're looking at anywhere between £1.5-£3k for a professional job. The "framework" is the hard part...

Thanks for the replies. I don't think I've explained myself very well, I'm not that up to date with web design terminology.

 

I want the same basic layout as the example I gave in my first post. Obviously it can't be exactly the same but along those lines. I think I'm going to use EKM Powershop as the shopping cart as I already have an site with them and I'm fairly familiar with the way it works.

 

When I say 'framework' (please forgive my poor terminology) I mean the basic layout, i.e I would only have to put the pictures of products, and graphics in to the site which would already have the image 'placeholders'? I need the main page which can be seen in my first post, and a product page. EKM supply their own checkout page which can't be altered.

 

Are there any companies out there who just do simple web design layouts like the one I need or would I still be paying £500+?

Speaking as someone who has just done a makeover of an Oscommerce site - I'd stay away from it...if you want to use one of the free systems out there, go with something more modern & easier to work with.

 

With websites you get what you pay for - generally speaking it is very common for someone that opts for the cheapest option to then have to pay again for a decent website in the future that actually works properly & that search engines can find their way around.

I didn't even know that site existed. It looks like it's just what I'm after. Anyone have any experience with them? I like the look of thissite, not sure how easy it would be to put together though...

It's dead easy, I've used it in the past and I'm going to be using it again soon. It's cheap, can use your own domain and the default themes are pretty good. Simple, but affective, which is just the look I go for.
