Price of a website

Featured Replies

Hi, I was just wondering what the average price is for a basic website.

Im talking Home page, about us page, contact us page, FAQ page.

Includes CSS menus maybe some mouse over images and a flash banner. Nothing Extreme.

Edit: May involve CMS

Design?

Design+xhtml/css?

Design+xhtml/css+CMS?

If your client wants a professional site with the knowledge that you will be around to maintain / enhance it in the future, ie. establish a long term business relationship then the price will need to reflect the number of hours it takes to make, administration and overheads.

It is impossible for anybody else to come up with this figure.

Design + xhtml/css + CMS.

Custom built or off the shelf?

You would be looking at £600+ for customisation of an off the shelf or £1200+ for a custom built

100% custom build.

All images/text/codes/ etc custom designed.

CMS not custom though

Sorry I didn't explain enough, only the CMS would be off the shelf, the design etc would be done custom built (unless you want a template).

I would say £400 - £500.

The way to think about it is this: it's probably going to take you a day or so. Even the "simplest" sites go through a final tinkering after client feedback.

So you and your client have got to be realistic.

I would go with a minimum of £350 and bill for any additional extras

I did a site for a fancy hair salon not long ago. While I was waiting for a meeting there I witnessed 3 of their clients leave paying around £80 each. £240 in a couple of hours!

So, other people don't work for nothing . . . .

for me my basic price for a business 1-5page website built with XHTML and CSS is £250 then the cost for the CMS added to this so roughly £1000 for it all

Wow this is interesting. I am an Intermediate Designer and Amateur Coder.

Designing is not a problem, I can create some great things, However I have not long been learning CSS.

I also have very little knowledge of Javascript, MySQL, CMS and other website relating tools such as RSS feeds and W3C Standards.

I used to use tables and purely HTML but the last 3 sites I have used external CSS files as I have been leaning it in College since September.

So when I get asked to price up a site, I do find it difficult due to the fact that although my sites look great, and function well, the coding may not be perfect.

I have now been asked to create a site containing 10 - 12 pages. The site will use CSS and also contain a flash banner. There will be a small gallery, some sounds and videos incorporated into the site too.

I will also be looking at incorporating automated Twitter & Facebook updates onto the home page.

For a novice, what sort of some could I expect? I know it depends on how long it takes me to design but I am talking minimal average terms and I can go from there. Cheers

When I was learning and a client asked for something out of my skill set I would ask a more experienced web designer/developer to assist me and charge accordingly. I believe this may be the best way forward for you. Has the client specified a budget? I wouldn't let your client know you are a novice designer. I would just hit them with a figure, tell them how long and then learn as you go along or get someone else to work with you on this.

Although I spend more time on my own projects now I could refer you on to a couple of people who may be able to assist you with this.
