hi-de-hi

I'm busy designing a new look for my boyfriends site...for some reason I get creative block when I am not getting paid for a site so thought I would see what everyone thinks of it at the moment.

http://spinal.dizidesigns.co.uk/

He just wanted a simple layout and as such that is what he has gotten...but opinions would be greatly appreciated :)

Personally I think it's excellent - valid coding too!

Perhaps some round or shaped corners at the bottom?

Only thing I'm not sure about is the "latest" project" thing sticking out there on the left - perhaps play around with the position of it. Also put a little space between "spinal" and the bottom of the chaps body?

As I say I think it's excellent - simple but very effective and original.

creative block

Are you joking? Wish I could have ideas like that......

Nice idea - not so sure about the guys profile - the head seems to be small in proportion to the body and looks a bit dodgy around the nose and the shoulders. When I have to do outlines I normally either take a photo of the object or person I need to draw and then get the image into Fireworks and up the contrast / brightness ratio so I get a sihouette and then use that as a template - it makes things more realistic.

Also not sure about the latest project box position - can't suggest anything else though...

As for the word spinal - have you thought of putting it along the spine instead, so that it's more relevant to the silhouette...this looks a bit naff, but if you decided on the right font and changed the figure to suit, it might work...but then again it might just be naff, just an idea to get your creative juices thinking.

Hi, I would make the figure take up less space at the top - I am having to scroll down to see further content - and make the menu text larger, I certainly wouldn't make it darker, if anything lighter, otherwise it won't be easily read.

Thanks, and I think I will experiment with the bottom corners :)

I'll told him that you thought he had a small head :p as I did take a picture. Problem is he wears really baggy clothes and that day had a hooded top on which is why there is a bulge by his shoulder, but it had to be in likeness to him...only difference is he doesn't have a hooked nose like in the silhouette.

Also I'll have a play around with the text on the header, originally it had none in it, and it was really a last minute thought.

Hi, if the figure took up less space then the width of the site would be a lot less, so you would have to scroll down anyway, as the width of the content space is dictated by the width of the figure (if that makes sense)...so there would be less space for the content so a lot more scrolling.

As for the menu text, I will have a play about with it, it can't be too much bigger otherwise it won't fit in the space...and there would be no chance of bigger text (or even this size text) fitting if the width was cut too :)

Thanks for the feedback so far, as I said I know there will be lots wrong with it, as the total time to develop, design and code the site comes in at just a little under 3 hours. So I do need to know what is wrong with it so I can improve it for him :)

when I said size, I meant the height of the figure , not the width. The higher it is, the more scrolling to get "under the fold".

You do know how scaling an image to keep proportions correct works, right? If the height is decreased the width will be decreased too, other wise if I just reduce the height and leave the width as it is the image will look stretched and distorted...something you will never see me do to an image. So if I reduce the size of the figure then the whole page width would have to be decreased due to the page layout.

Lets say I change the height of the image I will also reduce the width so that the image doesn't distort . So the image may be smaller but the width of the entire site will also be smaller meaning that the content will be forced to take more space vertically, you will still have to scroll because of this...best example would be on the software page, if the width of that page is reduced instead of 3 screen shots across there would only be two, which would mean the height of this page would be a lot bigger.

The height of a page is also determined by its width.

I'm not saying that its a bad idea to reduce the size of the header, but if its just due to having to scroll, then you will still need to scroll due to the lost width to keep the figures shape and on some pages more than you do now. Hope that makes sense.

I am aware of the necessity of keeping the apect ratio in reducing the size of the image.

I still think it's too large - while the height of a page is related to it's width - one image should not surely determine the entire proportions of a page . if the image reduced the page layout space can surely be filled out in other ways.

but I'm not a coder- I'm just treating it as a visitor would.

If the clothes get in the way of the picture then....remove the clothes, that's fun for everyone! Sorry not very helpful I know, but i thought it was funny :)

Just a quick question Diz,

Who wrote the copy on the front page? You or him?

lol

Love the look of the site.

As Eskymo suggested, might look a bit better if the logo text actually ran across the spine.

Other than that, I like it.

Teehee, originally he didn't thank me, I think I said something about it to which he then decided to thank me by making fun of my over use of the words little and big :p I don't think he intended for it to go on the site, I have my suspicions that he thought I would change it before I put it up. So even though it does sound like I wrote it, he did as he thought I would nag him until I got a thanks.... A chocolate cookie would of been thanks enough though (a hint for him should he read this...which is unlikely :( )

As for changes, I will be having a look at the logo and other suggestions I agree need to be looked at...probably next week as I don't have any time this week, I will keep you posted

I'm quite jealous of how good the site looks, well done!

Only one?

My My, but you work cheap lol
