Google updates

Featured Replies

Am I right in thinking that Google reads and updates the content of your site everyday. But it only updates its listings once a month?

No, Googlebot will crawl your site a lot more than once a day - check your server logs.

As for updating the Google index (listings), this is an ongoing process that happens every minute of the day. Can you imagine the state of the search results after a month of no changes? I'd switch to Yahoo pretty quickly if that was the case!

If you had a number of sites linking to yours recently, such as a PR6 a couple of PR4's and PR3's. Would you expect to move up the rankings. If so by how much and how quickly?

To be a bit move specific, say your site was on page 2 of a difficult search and page 6 of an extremely difficult search.

Cheers

Google will come back and check more often for sites that update. Many sites will get crawled once a month if they are lucky (depending on inlinks and how much traffic it gets)

Essentially the more important Google thinks the page is, the more often it will get crawled.

The question of a month is almost irrelavant as Google is constantly adjusting their alogorithms, and is reported to make 400+ tweaks a year. (more than one a day)

From my knowledge, and experience : If your site is new and hasn't had any new content in the first two weeks, Google may decide to wait a while before the next index, if it still hasnt updated... then it will check less often.

(So save back some good content for the first couple of weeks of a website launch, to make sure that Google sees you update early on. Start as you mean to go on)

Inlinks do affect positions BUT.. they must also drive traffic, if links are there and no one ever clicks them, they are almost pointless.

It all depends on the strength of the sites ranking directly above you - forget the 55million other results below you, its all junk.

To clarify, and for anyone else reading, by 'strength' I mean all the standard SEO technical areas (title, heading tags, content, last updated etc) but also backlinks. So, your website sits second to a website above which is identical in every way (ignore Google's duplicate content penalty for now) - the site with more backlinks would rank the highest.

As for your example, how are you concluding you have a 'difficult keyword'?

Three links will do very little to your site, regardless of the PR - unless the guy above you has zero, unlikely as you have mentioned they are highly competitive terms. Sure it'll help, but three links is a drop in the ocean.

However, to get those links noticed faster - make sure you 'ping' the website, submit the rss feed and social bookmark it.

The terms I'm on page 2 for is: 'website designers', 'website designer' and 'professional website design'.

The term I'm on page 6 for is: 'website design'

My sites a PR4, but its only a year old. I do try to put lots of relevant content in to help.

Is it worth putting lots of content on each page and will this effect the SEO of the main index page?

I'd need to see the sites to comment further. Are these global results?

No, I wish. UK only at the moment, but thats my target audience.

The link is the one below

How many unique visits are you getting on the site from those keywords at the moment?

I would suggest keep building links and generating much more targeted copy. The competition to break the top ten is tough, but doable. You've done well to get a PR4 within 12months.

Additional extra content on your inner pages won't affect your home page ranking.

Thats a shame. I'm going to anyway for those inner pages. Thanks S3.

I've hit page 1 (position 7) for 'website designers' - hooray!!

I hope Google isn't just teasing me.

Neil

It will have a postive effect if you link back to homepage. So Neil, ADD more related content and link back to the homepage.

As a result, your homepage will build more weight and authority in Google.

But doesn't everyone, on inner pages, link back to the home page or am I misunderstanding you. Navigation surely requires a link back home as standard.

'navigation' is outside of the content body, and holds very weight in Google. Also, it will often be referred to as 'Home', with the same anchor text - which is worth very little in SEO terms to help the targetted page. Your missing the idea of using targeted keywords.

If you begin creating content which relates to the target page, on SEO friendly URL's, and you link to the homepage with anchor text from those new pages, you increase the authority of that homepage.
