While i was hanging on this forum today reading blogs, finding problems to my solution, it strikes in my mind that afterall we all belong to webdesiigner's community. Some have just started and some are mastered it already and some are on the way....

 

Why dont u all share some feeling about how u first entered in this unique and vast world of webdesigning..ur any experience??????!!!!!!!1

well... I started making websites when I was about 11 (16 now) using those online web page makers like 20megsfree.com and stuff like that lol. I then started learning solid html and css about 1-2 years ago and now I have my pages www.boyleswebdesign.com and www.jakeboyles.com. Well thats my little story lol

I started out making websites on free hosts Geocities and Freewebs when I was twelve (I'm now 16). I didn't know what validated code was, I used tables and iframes for layouts, and my text was usually very, very small. My talents in graphic design improved, but until this year I still had no clue about XHTML or accessibility. Around the time I got good at validating and making more accessible sites, I bought creativeburst.org (my... 5th or 6th domain).

I think I was about 14-ish. Back then HTML soup was the de-facto standard. And there was no talk about doctypes or quirks mode. Common practice was to design for IE or Netscape and put a big fat your browser suck button on the site.

 

I couldn't find a working WYSIWYG editor. So I have been coding it by hand from the beginning. I think I used a program called Arachnophilia http://arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/

 

Then in 2003 before I went to study at uni I figured I got into PHP as I wanted to make a site where people who're going to go to the same uni as myself could sign up with and get to know each other in advance. Still using table layouts.

 

But from there I began to create a php gallery and blog. And while looking up some layout problems I had I came across articles on CSS and the importance of proper layout, validating, not using table layout. Then further the importance of semantics and the story goes on.

started at 11, just cutting and pasting for my dads site (Sportsaver.co.uk), in order to add offers to the front page. After that I started using Frontpage for about 3 days before I realised how rubbish it was.

 

After that I got into HTML, then CSS, and then a teeny bit of JavaScript. Finally, I got into PHP and became a "proper" geek (officially when you 20% of what you type is not in the alphabet, and 99% is not in the dictionary). After that I learnt (My)SQL, and got muuuuch better with JavaScript (thanks to Mr Resig there).

 

Once I was 16, I got my first "job", making an e-commerce site (http://www.htglass.co.uk) for an antiques guy who was also my mum's landlord. I got paid about £650 for it, including domain+hosting+business card. It hasn't sold anything since it was launched (when I was halfway 17) 0_o

 

Since then, I completed high school, and have been freelancing for the past few months (since September i guess), and now have pretty everything I want - a great computer, money to be an impulsive buyer with, and a bed which is 4 feet away from my workstation.

 

Next year, I am off to the University of Liverpool (NOT JMU or Hope) to study Computer Science.

 

I enjoy programming, and I think most people on here who know any real amount would admit to pretty much the same. No-one does this just for the money.

you all make me feel so old. I got into web design in my late 20's and been doing it ever since.

I started in 1998 when I first got on the net - I was curious about how web pages were made so I sat down and learnt. My first ever site is still going strong today!

I started when I was 15, which will make it 9 years ago...I decided I wanted to create a website so learnt some basic HTML (how to do a table layout, place some images, change different colours). I didn't really take it seriously until maybe 5 years ago when I stumbled upon Dreamweaver so I spent some time learning that, although I was still into doing print work (as my background lies in graphic design). Then finally about 2 years ago I started learning css more seriously as up until then I was just using it for fonts and other little bits while still laying things out in tables...now I think I am quite confident at it, but still have a lot to learn as it moves and changes all the time, which is what makes it fun, I'm always learning something new

I started when i was 13, using things like freewebs and geocities, i didn't like geocities then my pc wouldent install java so geocities didn't work. thats when i started to learn html and things like that.
