The job spec is: Skills required: Photoshop, Illustrator, HTML, XHTML, CSS. Adobe Flash desired but not essential. You must be able to hand-code HTML pages without tables. Many thanks Chris
November 1, 200916 yr Basic skills of a web designer. Entry level, for a fresh grad + London weighting, I'd say around £18-20k, go up if you have a good portfolio of websites or more experience within a similar role. Good luck!

November 14, 200916 yr Im 25 years young! Ask for more, sign up to job alerts - that should give you a good idea of how much you should be paid. The company i work for pays the designers £25/h at min (skills req: xhtml,css,photography and flash)... so, dependant on your actual skill you should be asking for more. Chris Just ask them nicely "will i get a % of commuting costs back" or "do i get any expenses"

Chris Go for it mate I am the only web designer at my company, as they are not a Web Design company themselves. So I just build websites for them. But i think i'm gonna ask for a payrise. I know im a 'junior' but bloody hell. £12500 a year, plus the travel is far and ive had 2 parking tickets since i been there! Good luck and let us know how you get off!!

Chris Always ask if they'll pay for training and certification - that way you have something to take onto other jobs (but don't be too blatent.) Certification will help both yourself and their business in the long run. If you're given the option to go a course make sure you take it.
November 19, 200916 yr I'm 25, I've been at my job for almost a year. I'm on £16K, up from a start £12K. I came with pretty decent knowledge and skills but I lacked any inducty experience. Since this is my first full time job, I'm really happy to be getting 16
November 21, 200916 yr An experienced web designer in London should be commanding no less than 30k ... The going rate is around £35k ... For the job you're going for, even at entry level I'd be expecting £20k .. The way I figure it, if I can drive a truck for £18k (and that's outside of London), then shouldn't I be worth more being skilled? Sorry, I wouldn't open my eyes in the morning for under £20k ... I'd rather go work at Tesco, lol...
November 27, 200916 yr I'm an apprentice ans at the moment i earn 420 pound a month, and i drive from leeds to wakefield every morning. it kills me to wake up and know im getting buttons, but the experience and skill building is the only thing that keeps me going lol.

November 27, 200916 yr Author I've decieded to hand my notice in with my current job. Doing 14 hour days for around £500 a month was bringing me down. They would not give me a decent enough raise! Been looking at jobs around my area and they average around 19k, and have a few interviews lined up, so fingers crossed! Chris
November 28, 200916 yr My first job after graduating was with a very well known retailer as an online designer in Hampshire. My salary was 18k from start to finish. I was there for just over a year. My main required skills were Photoshop, HTML and minimal CSS. I was never really taxed as most things were templated and I did feel a bit like a photoshop monkey at times. I have now moved to Dorset and started a new job with a web design agency. I have been doing photoshop mocks up and coding in html and css and using jquery. After my trial period they put me on 17k. I asked if they could put me to 18k as I didn't really feel comfortable taking a pay cut from my last job to my current one which requires alot more skill and high quality design work, which I feel I have produced. But they weren't having any of it. Explaining that because I didn't currently know how to style php and xml 17k was a good wage for me. An ex-college of mine said he wouldn't even do all that for 19. Is 17k a reasonable wage for a web designer in the South West with 1 years experience who knows Photoshop, XHtml, CSS very well and can use the jQuery library?
November 28, 200916 yr My first job interview with a large public sector company (education) i made the final shortlist of 5 from 80+. Starting salary was 22k, with pension and incremental 5 year wage increase. To be considered for that position as a recent grad with a limited portfolio shows if you find a company who will pay the going rate then industry says 20k is about right. I ended up getting a job with an agency here for 16k and a large commute which clearly was never going to last.
