I have a laptop e-commerce site with over 20,000 products available. As mentioned in an earlier topic i will be looking for either a free lance web person or a full time web person to take over the running of our website.

On what basis is it best to decide which avenue to go down ? I like the idea of working with a full time web person as i can work with them side by side, alternatively using a free lancer doesn't put as much of a financial strain on the busines as the new site is still a pretty new venture.

 

What sort of salary will i be looking at paying a full timer against a free lancer ?

 

Any ideas which will make my decision easier ?

I don't really think people will be wanting to post quotes on this site for you.

 

I'd imagine that employing a switched-on designer full time would be a waste of their talents.

 

Personally, I'd get a freelancer in and sort it out so that a chunk of your site is user friendly on the backend.

you can always strike up a friendly working relationship with a freelance designer, so you can still get what you want via a freelancer as you could by hiring someone full time.

 

But each designer and developer is different so rates will vary, I could say you could be looking at £12 an hour and then someone else could say £20, so it varies from designer to designer. You won't get a figure until you shop around....so to speak.

IMHO the most important thing you need to decide is if you need a full-time, beck-and-call webmaster. I agree with Dizi that you can get exactly what you want by hiring a freelancer, but then there is always the issue of whether they will be able to stick with you in the long-run, or - on a month-to-month basis - give your project full-time attention (if that's what you desire).

 

In other words, if you really need a full-time employee, you'd be hard-pressed to find a freelancer who could give you full-time - they'll have other clients so may only be able to give you 20 hrs/wk or so.

 

So first and foremost, determine what you want this person to do and whether or not that necessitates a full-time person. Then see if you can afford it. Full-time techy jobs tend to be highly paid.

THanks for the advice, i could really do with a full time web master but my site currently doesn't make enough to probably support their wages. I think free lance looks like the way to go for now until my circumstances change !!

A lot depends on how much time is involved. Many freelancers like myself do regular updating work for our clients but this normally falls in the realm of a few hours a month, and often less. I suspect you need a lot more than that!

 

I'd suggest first trying to find someone you can call on to do urgent stuff until you get sorted. If you find someone good you may find that what takes one person 8 hours, someone with experience may do it in 2 hours.
