What would be the best antivirus protection used for home to buy?

I used to insist on Avira AntiVir but I've gone back to AVG now. So go for AVG-free, there's no point in buying the full version, it only adds useless functionality to your software.

I use Avira premium security suite, best antivirus I've used. AVG free is ok, but doesn't catch everything.

Exactly. The amount of peoples' houses I visit who have viruses because they're going on ridiculous sites is amazing, I just can't understand the stupidity of some people. I literally haven't had a virus infecting my system for nearly five years. Obviously I've had the odd one that's had to be stuck in quarantine, but I reacted to it quickly and it didn't cause me any hassle since.

 

 

I also recommend Avast, Simple google search will link you to the website, They have free and paid versions, And i agree with above posts, it is all about where you visit online really, and same for me as traxor, i haven't had a virus in a few years so i guess im lucky in a sense.

Before choosing which security suite to go for it's worth looking at http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews/main-tests - they run tests on all the major security software.

nod 32 from eset.co.uk / eset.com is easily one of the best on the market, its certainly the fastest with an extremely high detection rate and low footprint.

Ive always used Norton 360 - whats your views on this software?

I would have agreed up to a month ago. I have the paid for version and have an option of free upgrade from 8.5 to 9.0. Great, on the face of it, however the upgrade installation fails. Emailed their support (i think) sadly the experience left me feeling very uncertain whether they received the email or not) No reply as yet.

 

The good news is my subscription is up for renewal next month so I might well try an alternative.

 

My bank provides Kapaskey 2009 for free ....... Anyone know if this is any good??

kapersky is regarded as brilliant for the price, and for free is even better. For those not wanting to spend ££, then get avast free edition

If you're on Virgin Broadband, they give you PC Guard AV Software (based on Kaspersky) for free.

 

Unfortunately, they haven't upgraded it for Windows 7. I did an Internet search and found Comodo AV - so far, so good

NOD32 gets my vote.

A friend of mine's computer's just gone haywire and he thinks it's a virus. He's an illustrator and is in a panic because he might have lost all his work. This is an emergency. Are you in London or can anyone in London help?

Tell him to keep tapping 'F8' when starting up his computer, then load safe mode. Back up any files if he can using that or the CMD prompt, then reformat the computer. It might be a hassle.

He could use a Linux Live CD with NTFS support such as Knoppix, boot into that and backup everything to a USB pen or hard drive.

 

As for best AntiVirus, I've been using NOD32 for years and it's never let me down. Low footprint as well, especially compared to the commercial bloatware that you get from PC World nowadays (not taking any names).

You're welcome. It might not work though because sometimes you cannot connect drives or burn CDs in safe mode.

Hey Mr. Why not use the AVIRA PREMIUM instead of the free Avira, premium is very good for it screens a lot of virus/worms and malicious file. I suggest you'd use it. been using it for 1 year now

I prefer Norton ..its has worked great for me.

For PCs, I've always thought Nod/Eset was the best as someone mentioned before.

 

Microsoft have also released their own software that you can use for free if you have a valid version of Windows, it's called Microsoft Security Essentials.
