I don't have any databases on my hosting - or my clients.

 

Do i need to make sure I have one for joomla? I have heard cushycms doesn't need one - what is the difference?

Cushy CMS is a real basic CMS for adding minor content it wont do half of what Joomla does, Joomla is a full blown CMS I'm pretty sure you do need a database set up.

 

The difference is in fuctionality, Cushy basicly will let you add new info and images, but doesnt let you create new templated pages, or comments etc, its pretty simple compared to something like Joomla, Drupal or wordpress. hence the need for databases.

Nah, you could store your data in XML files, but you would soon reach it's limitations.

 

Wouldn't recommend it though.

You can also use php's fopen fwrite fget functions

First of sounds like your hosting is pretty basic. I advise ya to find better hosting really and don't limit your ambitions due to a restrictive package.

 

Any good CMS uses a database and even the most basic PHP websites use a database so I'm surprised your hosting has none.

 

Also sounds like your not decided on what CMS your going to use and I currently have an offer for FREE WordPress installation, hosting and domain! All can be setup in a day and the only catch is that I put a little advertising on the site in order to regain some revenue. Let me know if your interested.

 

I can provide good hosting at low cost for Joomla or Drupal also however I do not install them free right now as I've only just got outa uni and not had time to figure them out.

Yep, that's true but in many cases there's an extra charge for MySQL etc. "proper" databases. Our solution was to create a simple yet quite powerful (in my opinion) open source CMS that uses SQLite as a datebase:

SQLite comes with PHP 5.1 and newer so it's pretty standard stuff. No database configurations needed, very easy to backup etc. There's a download and demo available, feedback is appreciated!

Cushy CMS do the hosting for you, but their CMS is very limited. I would argue that 99.99% of CMS require a database. You could use the file access as skidz suggests, but that's a major security hole to drive the whole site off it, and inevitably you'd be reliant on your own coding skills. Given the nature of the opening question, I'm guessing you're not fully conversant with PHP.

 

The amount of effort you'd have to put into a workaround is likely to be way more than ponying up £10 - £20 more a year. I'd just upgrade your hosting if I were you.

Databases are pretty much a standard thing nowadays, and if you don't have them available on your hosting you're going to hit more and more barriers as time goes on. Without databases you could find youself turning a lot of work away - can you afford to do that?

You need proper hosting and lots of databases if you are going to use a real CMS.
