Only have one h1 header tag per page. So many times I see great templates with multiple h1 tags.

content content content, keyword rich content, well written content, anchored links within your content... err did I say content!

Of course for some SEO 'experts' their amazing on-page optimization technique involves spamming no-follow forums with links through to content that's keyword-stuffed illiterate recycled crud. It's all well and good saying quality content - but delivering it is what matters. When people land on your site, when SEO has done it's job, then starts the real hard work of turning a visitor into a customer.

Lesson 1 - content is for REAL people, but written well search engines will love it too.

Right on everyone - content is king. Balancing the relationship between writing for search engines and writing for real people is key, as mentioned above. Fortunately, the evolution of search engine algorithms is placing a higher value on well written content.

Internal linking, if one article on your site references to something else you've written about, link to it. Not only is Google putting increasing weight on internal linking, it will help with visitor retention especially if content with a broad topic funnels users down to more specialised items.

Possibly the two most important things that search engines look at aside from content is your meta information..

A good title and description can make all the difference, making you primary KW part of you title is a key point, you should have it as close to the beginning as possible and not have it too long.

For example "Plumbing Repairs in Barrow : The Plumbing Company" would be a perfect title for a page about plumbing repairs for a company based in Barrow.

Your description should also reflect your main keywords, and actually sound organic. Too many times i have seen description that are stuffed with keywords and sound automatically generated.

like mentioned above, interlinking is important, however, making sure you anchor text is spot on will help even more, correct use of "alt" and "title" tags.

Also, on page optimisation can greatly benefit from the quality of your pages them selves, for example page load speed, amount of server request being used, size of pages etc. If you have FireFox, get a plugin called YSlow for firebug, it's a great tool for determining how well your pages are built.
