I have a website that I'm looking at re-designing for a client: http://www.furnking.co.uk/ I've got a quote together but I want to include a price for adding CMS, to update the products on this page: http://www.furnking.co.uk/gallery1.htm ...and also all the other product pages (47 in total) How much would you charge to make these pages update-able? (It would have to be so the client could add a new product and also update prices on existing ones. *I'm not putting this in 'looking for hire' because I'm not sure if the client wants a CMS yet, just looking for a few quotes to get an idea of price.* Thanks muchly Dan
May 12, 200917 yr Rather than adding a CMS to a static site you'd be better off rebuilding the whole site with a CMS. Pricing up a CMS site isn't that much different to a static site. Looking at your sample site I'd probably break it down like this... Research most suitable CMS for the project - 2 hours Cost of CMS, installation, addons + setting up - allow £300 Create design concept - 12 hours Write HTML, CSS, Javascript as required - 8 hours Build CMS templates - 8 hours Build CMS content types - 4 hours Add content - 8 hours Test and hand over - 3 hours So total hours = 45 hours at my hourly rate (for argumenets sake say £50/hour) £300 for software costs Total: 45 hours x £50 = £2250 + software £300 = £2550
May 13, 200917 yr It may be worth looking at using an open source ecommerce software and then taking the payment modules off. to do that i would be looking at £1500ish for the complete job (that includes rebuilding that one to SEO levels) Do you know if he has had any SEO done? that may be a good avenue for him to look at going down. Reaper Thanks Dude, Could you point me in the right direction for the ecommerce software? He hasn't as far as I know. He had his site done around 4 years ago. When people talk about SEO what do you mean? I understand the idea of optimising a site for search engines in that you code it correctly, add in the right keywords and tags and make sure the headers are clean... but is there a grander side to it all?? I've seen companies charge £1000+ for 'SEO' but what are they actually doing to the site?? Thanks a lot for your help it is appreciated! Dan

(sorry, completely clueless about these things) I was only quoting sample numbers as a rough guide, by my example if the hourly rate was £25 the total cost would be halved. Software costs are always incurred irrespective of whether you use free or commercial software. Don't forget time needed to download the app, set up a database, install, configure etc. Then there's the cost of searching, installing, configuring addons etc on top.
May 13, 200917 yr Yes there are always costs. Although it depends on how good you are at coding. Something like Opensourcecommerce (think its .com, check google) should be able to be modified enough. Has he considered the option of adding a complete store? SEO is also about link building, submitting the forums address to the right places, getting word out. Although i do find alot of SEO companies try to keep their methods secret, and they vary slightly, they can often be overpriced. Reaper

The type of store he runs - they get lots of different bit and bobs through that they sell in the shop, they make to measure and things like that, but I don't think they have a massive warehouse. As I say, not even sure if he'll need to upload products all that often but I need to get an idea of CMS/eCommerce anyway so I though I'd ask. Also, thanks Reaper for the SEO info. It's something I could look in to for larger sites. My clients are really just independent traders who just want a working site to shout about their business. I suppose I could have a look round and see who can offer a good deal. Cheers! Dan
