Redesign of site

Featured Replies

Okay i posted a link to my site a long time ago and got a lot of positive feedback about it. Everything everyone said was accounted for.

I'm getting back into using WDF alot now like i used to :)

Well back on subject, im completely redesigning my website. I have a few sketches i am working on but ultimatly, what would you suggest i add?

the website is here.

Thanks in advance for any replies ;)

my observations:

1. at the moment the header is wasted space. You don't need 'welcome to my webspace', you need a logo that contains your name. The fading text is also unnecessary. Use that space to involve the user, tell them about points of interest, new content etc or just leave it empty.

2. the grey is too similar in tone to the blue. Creating more contrast will help. Try lightening or darkening one of them.

3. your text needs to be broken up. Right now it's one big mass. In your CSS try reducing the line-height and adding a padding-top and padding-bottom of half the line-height to the <p>s. If the text has to be blue, lighten it, otherwise change the colour.

4. generally, the site is a bit stark. Perhaps you could add some graphics to the layout?

5. the email image is a bit random. Its design needs to be referenced elsewhere in the site, e.g. when you hover over a menu item.

Looking at your website, I feel like I traveled back in time about 10 years. Here are some things I think could make it better.

1. Loose the welcome message, replace it with your name

2. Loose the animation in the header, make it only display where you are on the site.

3. Make the navigation highlight where you are on the site

4. Make the blog page long, don't make it scroll in the div

5. What's up with your line height? Seems to change way too much (on MAC FF3)

6. Proof read your content, it's very poorly written. Here are some examples...

"You will have to bviously add your own images and edit the Google image."

"...why not try changing the CSS to for a different design to what I have!"

7. Please save us, and not use the blink tag

8. Why even have a portfolio? You just have a screenshot of the site you're already on.

You should check out some design sites, take what you like, copy it, change it, etc... Some may disagree, but the best way to learn is to copy what already works (without ripping obviously).

Good luck!

I have to agree with everything that is said before.. the design is frankly horrible, it put me off soo much i didnt even want to go to a second page to review the site. (The colours). The content is poorly written with not much thought put into it. And the scrolling is pointless, just have a really long page.

Edit: and agreeing with the post above, check out some templates and see what works well on them and what you like on them, borrow some ideas and/or colour schemes.
