I was just looking at the drawn numbers for the last 365 days on the lotto site, #9 and #38 both have been drawn 23% of the time and #38 was drawn four times in February? Is that not awfully high? that means 1 in 4 games over the last year one of those numbers has been drawn?

 

And on average (in the whole time it's been running), #38 is drawn 17% of the time. (just over a 1 in 6 chance, which is odds down from 1 in 42-49?) << 42-49 depending when out of the 7 it's drawn.

 

My dad used to spend hours and hours working on the lottery, he was one of those irritating people who kept a record of draws, patterns and trends. The only two things i remember him saying is that numbers cluster together, which i've noticed seems to be a fairly truthful trend, and that it's extremely rare to have a number from each decal crop up, which again i rarely see.

 

Just wonder if any of you who think that trying to calculate the draws is impossible, theoretically each ball has an equal chance, but statistically, some balls are more favoured. Is it a coincidence? or fluke? Think too much and it'll boggle your brain. Me and my mum have always held the belief that the odds are the same no matter what ball you pick?

 

Just boggles me, any of you super-genius's share your thoughts? Am i a Camelot conspirasist in the making? (and is conspirasist a real word?)

I have never considered myself a genius, but one thing I do know is that when you deal with the facts and stats you have a very slim to none chance of lotto success.

 

It's all fine and well looking at trends etc, but it is just a fluke that these numbers get drawn out. Unless there is some physical defect in the machine and the overall weight differences of the balls. Who knows can a layer of paint really make that difference.

 

To further decrease the chances of winning, picking the more popular balls in a lotto line doesn't increase your chances. The odds of getting those balls together are just as high as any combination of balls.

We usually get ticket a year (me and the siblings) and it usually comes in our Christmas stocking.

 

I just don't agree with gambling, but the idealogy of it is super. Like a few weeks ago, the team I support (Glasgow Celtic) were playing Aberdeen. We had suffered a few bad results, but before the match the people I go to the game with, we usually make a prediction. I thought bugger it, we are going to slam this team we are due alot of goals. So I said 7-0 to be the final score.

Sods law though, and the following week I would have probably predicted wrong and lost some money.

haha yeah. My dad used to analyse the stats one sequential numbers and the like, we've got a big box of papers he'd done and what nots, bit out of date now though, suppose it's probably the curse of retirement.

 

Some of the scratchcards though, have odds of like 1 in 2.5 of winning, granted, £2 a pop, saying you only win £2 back, for every £10 you play you'll win £4, but then you could win more.

 

I used to live on a sink estate out in the country, and we used to buy the odd scratch card from the garage their, and we gave up for a few weeks because there's better things to waste money on. The woman who worked their, she was a nice lass, she bought her first scratch card and hit the jackpot, a cool 1 mil, but she was plastered over the papers and quit her job (she'd get mugged or god knows what every time she left work).

How do you even go about comparing sequential numbers? and what are the odds on thunderball dya know? (winning anything is better than not winning).

 

Also do you understand the whole syndicate thing, when my mum worked at a large legal firm, they had a syndicate. My mums numbers came up and they won a few grande (but split between like 40 people, and i never saw a penny )

It is really difficult to motivate for personal projects, due to lack of funding and resources - Paid projects always seem to go a whole lot smoother i.e less tearing out of hair and biting nails. Although I have a feeling it should be the other way around.

Do you think its possible to work out which 6 numbers will come up after the 1st 1 has been drawn? on average of course. if you could you might only need to buy 49 tickets (or however many number there are) maybe thats too hard and you will need 2 numbers to work out the rest, in which case you might have to spend 2401? this is interesting. is it worth spending 14m on the lottery if the jackpot is 30m?

No offence to your Dad Bocaj but there are a lot smarter mathematicians in the world than him. I think that if there was a way to predict the numbers that someone would have worked it out and profited by now, it could have already happened though. We'd never know about it.

I think that if there was a way to predict the numbers that someone would have worked it out and profited by now, it could have already happened though.

 

He didn't think you could predict the number, only narrow down your odds. Most of what he did bypassed me, and the lottory carried out a study that showed some numbers were preferable to appear in general, from certain machines, and from certain balls, but they said that all balls and machines are checked, weighed etc. every 5 games.

 

Just seems odd, but then, how many games would have to be drawn to get a fair set of odds? I mean flipping a coin twice to see if the odds are 50/50 just doesn't work. 1 in 14,000,000 chance of hitting the jackpot, how many draws would have to be made to get an accurate set of data?

Work out which balls are the most overdue and only every play with them? Doubt you'll increase your chances of winning 'the big one' but might get a few more tenners in your lifetime!?

 

Shouldn't be too hard to rustle up a Access Database to analyse the previous draws in this way either?

There's already software out there to help aid you in analysis, using all the draw data right from the beginning. However i was talking to my mum about this and how many draws would there have been to get an accurate data set?

That was good, a little baffling, but interesting. The prime numbers and the quartz ball was more than intriguing though. And i like the whole idea of someone playing with numbers, creating something with no practical or foreseeable use, only to have someone link the pieces together a few hundred years later. I still don't understand how their's a link in two things that seem completely unrelated in every way though? Or are the connecting links still missing or just unexplained in that episode?
