How to stop someone from using IE

Featured Replies

Are you tired of seeing your family or best friend using Internet Explorer. There is a solution. Many people know of the website called "http://www.crashie.com" which crashes internet explorer upon going to the website. We are going to use this website to force your friend/family to stop using Internet Explorer.

Step 1:

Go on your friends computer and in the internet options, set the startup page to "http://www.crashie.com".

Step 2:

Close internet explorer and wait for your friend to use it.

Step 3:

Laugh at the fact that IE with crash everytime your friend tries to start it.

Step 4:

Give them a firefox/opera installer. Depeding on their computer skills, they will most likely forget about internet explorer because they don't know how to fix it.

Hope this helped :D

This is actually a great tip!

I don't agree with making sites that don't support IE, but when friends/family won't take my (expert) advice that IE really is dangerous, I think this may well be an excellent final resort.

I couldn't believe it the other day. My friend was visiting for the weekend and she asked to borrow my laptop. A little while later she put it down and stated that she had finished doing her banking. I glanced at the screen and to my horror I realised she had used IE. My laptop has Flock as default browser, but also has Firefox & chrome, but she had searched through the menu to find IE 7 (present for testing of course).

I exclaimed at her : "You didn't just do your online banking on my wireless laptop in IE did you?"

"Yes of course" she replied, "Why, shouldn't I have?"....

After explaining the fact that not only is wireless unsecure (even with my WPA2 and mac filtering) but IE is riddled with holes, she simply said "Oh I'm sure it'll be fine".

ARRRRRGH!

Let it all out. It's okay :D

I was forced to play this trick on one of my friends who insisted that internet explorer is the best browser in the world (he's also a die hare windows fan). It was so sad....

I don't know about that. The more I learn about CSS/JS, and the more IE specific behaviours you realise you have to correct (don't even talk about event listeners, or "this") - the more I want to rid the world of IE forever.

I can't for the life of me see why they insist on creating non W3C components for their browsers. IE is arguably the root of at least 50% of any web developer's headaches.

Piece of c**p.

I really dig your avatar.

That is all.

Wait until the felon is not looking, and then move or rename the internet explorer executable so that none of the start menu or desktop shortcuts work any longer. Install Opera, Chrome and Firefox, and let the repentance begin :pp

Here's a better idea, modify the shortcuts to internet explorer so that they open up an alternative browser instead.

But seriously, using methods like this could still be considered malicious and shouldn't even be done. If you want someone to use Firefox as an alternative to Internet Explorer, then tell them the benefits, if they can't get on with it, then it's fine. Hopefully they'll see sense and install Firefox, but oh well, it's their loss, as web designers we just have to put up with it, in a way I think it makes my job more interesting :).

Anyway, this is enough talk, the European Union are actually in talks with Microsoft about bundling Firefox with every new operating system and computer, and as far as I'm aware, it looks like the legislation is going to be placed down, so hopefully people will start to use it more and more.

Maybe Internet Explorer 8 will see some major changes once it comes out of beta.

Or.. wait until the felon isn't looking and dual boot the computer with Linux, set Linux as the default OS, sit back and watch them beam with joy as they turn their machine on :D

If they insist on liking IE, simply install the Aero Basic theme on Firefox to fool them into thinking they are actually using IE.. hehe

I've been praying hard that IE would just vanish into thin air. Thanks for the tip Iris. In our office where I work, we call IE a "programmer's nightmare" .

Make a shortcut to IE and when they click it have it shut down there computer, only show a scary looking dialog that says, if you do not switch to firefox your hard drive maybe be formatted.

Windows will shut down in 5...4...3...2...1...POOF gone.

lol

You disappoint me sir! Dual booting is for wimps! Wait until the felon is on the lavvy, format the hard disk to ext3 and install linux.

Sit back and watch the love fill the room when they boot up the machine.

Linux isn't as user friendly as windows is....yet. So if an unsuspecting victim looked at their computer and saw a black screen and a command prompt, I don't think they would be too happy.

I think you haven't seen linux lately.... You should take a fresh look

I have kubuntu linux with all the graphical effects. It looks pretty cool, but it's kind of advanced for the common computer user. Not many people want to type this:

sudo eject -T

sudo chmod u+x /media

If you think that's bad. My sister had no idea what Firefox was, and thought IE was the only way to access the internet. I'm not even sure if she knows what a 'browser' is. She's 24, it's quite sad...

I installed OS X onto her netbook, now every week I get 'I don't know how to use this, I hate it. Put Windows back on'.

So frustrating...
