Web Development Software
Here's what I use... Coding: Netbeans 7.0 - The editor i used to love was Aptana, but I ragequit the program because it didn't have a simple file syncing solution and I didn't enjoy creating projects on my actual server. Netbeans has this and it's absolutely perfect in my eyes for the type of work I do (mostly PHP & javascript) Design: Inkscape & Gimp - I know how to get the most out of free software Web: Firefox, Chromium, Opera

jquery onchange cause a loop
I hope I'm not misunderstanding your question. You want to calculate shipping onload, right? Did you try this bit of code? $(function(){ $(window).bind("load", function(){ //calculations }) })

Javascript Libraries vs. Do it Yourself
I guess I'm writing this just because I want to hear what the communities opinion is (but then again, that's the reason people write topics in the first place...) I was reading this article the other day about writing your own javascript or using a library. After studying and using JQuery, I guess you can say I have this stubborn attitude about how the code technically isn't 100% mine (if I'm making any sense at all). I understand that libraries such as JQuery are basically built for convenience and as a result, provide means for efficiently creating javascript quickly, but dunno.... Yes, I like JQuery and how it can simplify javascript to some extent, but I guess I'm wondering: 1) Which of you people in WDF use libraries and which of you have a stubborn attitude like me, 2) Would you recommend learning a library (which I already have) or would you recommend typing code the hardcore way? By the way, here's the link to the article I was reading. (http://javascript.about.com/od/hintsandtips/a/liborself.htm)

please critique my web design site
Not a bad design at all in my opinion, but your choice of content and it's presentation needs a lot of improvement in my opinion. As a whole, I like the design concept in that it has a sort of uniqueness, but there are a bunch of tiny things that can be worked on. For example: Logo: I would try and horizontally align the "Second Sighting/Web Design, SEO & PPC" text with the actual logo. Little things like that bug me xD Also, I personally would put the actual logo on the left of the text as opposed to the right. This is just my personal preference though. Font: Sorry, but I'm not liking the font of the green text at all. Not to mention, it doesn't look crisp....or maybe that's just my computer screen. dunno. In any case, I think you can use a much better font. One that's more.....rounded. Also, I think you should consider using a darker and paler sort of green and different variations of the base color as it would match the colors in the actual logo. As a last suggestion, I think it would look nice if you moved that text on the upper right hand side of the page on to the actual picture of the moon as opposed to having it level with the logo; it sort of takes away the impact of the actual logo by doing this. There are other bunch of tiny things that I would change, but that's all I have to say for now. Like I said, I still like the concept.

Hi Again
Hey again. For a while I used to be active on these forums, but then became inactive so I could make school and other things in life my priority. Now that I'm studying computing and web programming, figured I should come back and reintroduce myself since these forums really are the best that I've seen. So, hi. At one point in time I would have considered myself pretty advanced when it came to web design and web programming.....but now I'm rusty. Over the next month I'll be rereading all of my books and references to refresh me. Still fluent in HTML/XHTML, but css is blurry, javascript looks foreign, and lets not talk about php and other server side languages So, hey again and see you all around. PS: forums look a lot different from when I was last here. nice

Problem with an image rollover
Sorry, I should have been more specific. I hope you don't get insulted by the following. Is the buttons folder in the same folder as the css document or is the buttons folder in the same folder as the html document?

Problem with an image rollover
where is the css document in relation to the buttons folder?

New Design for website
If you plan to make those icons that size, then you should eliminate one of them instead of having 4 on one line and then 1 on the next. In my opinion, however, you need to drastically reduce the size of the icons because their quality is low and they conflict with the content of your page. While I'm on the subject of content, you need to add more of it. Explain and elaborate more on your company and its goals. Concerning the design itself, it missing something unique. So far, it looks generic. It you're a web design company, you should have something in your page that makes the viewer want to use you (something attractive looking). I do like your logo, though.

Problems with Tables and CSS
First, let me point out that you're missing the opening table tag; your table code just has an ending table tag (</table>). When you add the opening table tag, you can use the cellpadding attribute to increase the amount of space within the cells. Here's what you should have: <table cellpadding="whatever"> <tr> <th width="28%"></th> <th width="18%"><h2 align="center">Basic</h2></th> <th width="18%"><h2 align="center">Advanced</h2></th> <th width="18%"><h2 align="center">Premium</h2></th> <th width="18%"><h2 align="center">Reseller</h2></th> </tr> <tr> <th class="thcolalt">Web Space</span></th> <td class="thcolalt"><strong>1,000 MB's</strong></td> <td class="thcolalt"><strong>3,000 MB's</strong></td> <td class="thcolalt"><strong>5,000 MB's</strong></td> <td class="thcolalt"><strong>15,000 MB's</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <th class="thcolalt">Bandwidth</th> <td class="thcolalt"><strong>3,000 MB's </strong></td> <td class="thcolalt"><strong>5,000 MB's</strong></td> <td class="thcolalt"><strong>10,000 MB's</strong></td> <td class="thcolalt"><strong>40,000 MB's</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <th class="thcol"><strong>Free</strong> UK Domain Name</th> <td><img src="images/tick.png" alt="Included" /></td> <td><img src="images/tick.png" alt="Included" /></td> <td><img src="images/tick.png" alt="Included" /></td> <td><img src="images/tick.png" alt="Included" /></td> </tr> <tr> <th>Domains you can host on Webspace </th> <td>1</td> <td>2</td> <td>10</td> <td>Unlimited</td> </tr> <tr> <th>Sub-Domains</th> <td><img src="images/cross.png" alt="none" width="32" height="32" /></td> <td>5</td> <td>25</td> <td>Unlimited</td> </tr> <tr> <th class="thcol">PHP 5 & MySQL 5 </th> <td><img src="images/tick.png" alt="Included" /></td> <td><img src="images/tick.png" alt="Included" /></td> <td><img src="images/tick.png" alt="Included" /></td> <td><img src="images/tick.png" alt="Included" /></td> </tr> <tr> <th>MySQL Databases </th> <td>1</td> <td>5</td> <td>25</td> <td>100</td> </tr> <tr> <th class="thcol">Email Accounts </th> <td>10</td> <td>100</td> <td>250</td> <td>Unlimited</td> </tr> <tr> <th>Web Site Builder</th> <td><img src="images/tick.png" alt="Included" /></td> <td><img src="images/tick.png" alt="Included" /></td> <td><img src="images/tick.png" alt="Included" /></td> <td><img src="images/tick.png" alt="Included" /></td> </tr> <tr> <th>SSH Access </th> <td><img src="images/cross.png" alt="none" width="32" height="32" /></td> <td><img src="images/cross.png" alt="none" width="32" height="32" /></td> <td><img src="images/cross.png" alt="none" width="32" height="32" /></td> <td><img src="images/tick.png" alt="Included" /></td> </tr> <tr> <th class="thcol">Monthly Price </th> <td><strong>£1.99 / month</strong></td> <td><strong>£3.99 / month</strong></td> <td><strong>£4.99 / month</strong></td> <td><strong>£14.99 / month</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <th class="thcol"> </th> <td><div align="center"><a href="#"><img src="images/button2.jpg" alt="Sign Up Now" border="0" /></a></div></td> <td><div align="center"><a href="#"><img src="images/button2.jpg" alt="Sign Up Now" border="0" /></a></div></td> <td><div align="center"><a href="#"><img src="images/button2.jpg" alt="Sign Up Now" border="0" /></a></div></td> <td><div align="center"><a href="#"><img src="images/button2.jpg" alt="Sign Up Now" border="0" /></a></div></td> </tr> </table> Notice how I added the opening table tag at the very beginning of the code.

First site
Unless you're trying to get a job that requires that you know flash, I wouldn't learn it AT ALL. The simple fact of the matter is that you can achieve some cool effects without using adobe flash. Have you ever heard of jquery (a major javascript library)? I think you should learn how to use javascript and jquery before migrating to adobe anyhow, because jquery can give effects that look just like flash. Also, if you need website inspiration, go to creattica.com and look in the "css websites" section (or any section). You can find much better websites than the one you posted earlier. The one you posted looks horrible (I hope the designer isn't on this forum). In the end, you should just break out the good ol' paper and pencil and start drawing the layout. Then, after that, design it in photoshop or Gimp, or whatever you're using. Then, lastly, create the website code. Edit: if you need free pictures, you should pay a visit to sxc.hu

Your PC
My Computer OS: Windows XP & Ubuntu linux 9.04 with KDE desktop environment * Graphics Card: nvidia MX 2 or something like that (It's probably the oldest card alive today) Speed: 2 GB ram I think that the best OS for web development (or any kind of development) is Ubuntu/Kubuntu Linux. While Microsoft improved with Windows 7, kubuntu is still faster and can have better graphics (if your interested in how the OS looks and not how it functions). I, however, also have windows for browser testing and other little programs that don't work on the linux platform.
-
Which is the best OS for performance ?
For me, Ubuntu/Kubuntu is still the fastest. I switched two years ago and wasn't disappointed. PS: If you want to use windows apps on linux, try WINE(a popular program that lets you run windows programs with little speed reduction).

Graphic Design: Need Review
The software is a IDE for a space flight simulation program called Orbiter. Infact, I'm the main programmer . The community consists of many users that develop for Orbiter on a daily basis. Several people have requested an IDE and I plan to give them one. It's pretty great . I have 56 people on the development team.

Little help with galleria and scroll to div
I'm sorry. I'd hoped that one of the really intense javascript coders would have replied to your topic by now, but no one except me has. I would help you more, but unfortunately I've reached the end of my time limit and have to go. I wish you good luck though.

Little help with galleria and scroll to div
Aha!! If you want the code I just gave you originally, to work, you have to add the name attribute. Here is the corrected code: <div name="end"></div>

new site
First, I want to say that I personally love the logo; it's awesome. Concerning the design, I suggest that you lower the drop shadow opacity a little (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, tell me ). Other than that, Everything looks nice and clean. Whitespace (or gray space in your website) isn't a bad thing, but I think that you have too much of it. In the links and contact page, there exist only a few words. Is there any more information that you can add? rating: 9/10

Little help with galleria and scroll to div
Just to be sure, have you named the object that you are targeting "#end"? Forgive me if I've insulted you with this question.

Little help with galleria and scroll to div
Before I suggest this, let me tell you that my javascript skill is extemmely rusty. So is my spelling. I'm reviewing the whole lot of it next week. If I say something stupid....don't laugh Ok...why not try and replace the code you just showed, with this: <li onclick="location.href='document.getElementsByName("end")'"><img src="images/marker.gif" alt="1" /></li> try that. Hope I helped.
