Back in the dark ages of the web I started on a mac and loved it

I then had to use a PC because of the company I was at and I loved that even more.

I still own my mac, but just use it for music, web testing, invoicing

I work on a PC / design on a PC and love it.

 

It's all a matter of personal preference and your bank balance.

But all in all to be a good designer - you don't need a computer at all - you live and breathe it and should be able to design regardless of what kind of computer you have or what software you use.

You get what you pay for at the end of the day.

 

For a little under £500 i got quad-core 3ghz and 8gb ram.

 

How much would that cost on a mac?

 

And i have my leopard styl dock (: shortcuts on the side.... and my novelty clock... what more could i want?

 

I do like macs though, but the old ones in college and the immensely irritating spinning wheel of doom has put me off. on the other hand the way they handle windows, and using the F buttons to switch between windows quickly is a huge plus.

 

I'd like a mac, but i wouldn't pay for a mac.

 

Purely for the fact that most computers really need to be replaced at least once every 5, that's like £230 a year to have a mac or £80-100 for a pc.

 

PC's are cost effective, if you've got the time to maintain them, fiddle and tinker with them, and take care... if not a mac will pretty much take care of itself.

There is also the quality of the hardware connecting your ram and processor as basically everyone else does when saying macs are expensive...

I never said they were the same in terms of hardware, I said they were the same for designing on now-a-days. There is a difference in what I said and what you thought I said. Years a go macs were better for designers but today they are not.

 

You can get from A to B in a Ford Fiesta, and you can get to A to B in an Audi A8. They are both equally good at 'travelling'. One is more comfortable and will get you there quicker. If you are crap at driving then you might not get there at all.

 

you do know the reason why there are less viruses on a mac was because in the past it wasn't worth the virus makers time. Macs weren't popular as the majority of house holds that had internet access were windows users. But now that macs are becoming more popular more viruses are popping up for macs, so sorry.

Agreed, but I have given decent reasons why that is so. In the same way as it's my personal preference to wear shoes when I go outside, I don't have to, but there are good reasons for doing so (which I provided)

 

I build my own PCs so I know that quality is inside it thank you very much...again you have shown your personal preference

 

I have given a pretty good explanation as to why this an advantage. You can't keep saying personal preference to every point I make or there's no point in my advocating anything at all then is there? Of course people are entitled to their opinion, but that doesn't made said opinion correct.

My point about some people believing that it makes them a better designer is true, during my time at college, uni and on here I have seen it. There is something about a mac that makes some people (not all) think that they are great designers just because they own a mac.

 

From this quote onward in your post I agree with absolutely everything you say.

 

One last point, I am not a 'fanboy' - that means to me that I will defend it even though it has no merit. Or will advocate it even though I cannot define the reasons why. I've provided quite a few, and could continue to provide them. But I'm not going to because I have no quarrel with anything you have said in your later post. Your first one was not quite as balanced (IMO), especially as it was preceded with mostly negative mac bashing (from other posts).

About buying a new computer, but I fancy a change and the designers at my work advised getting a mac, and a few friends have advised it.

 

What advantages are there for designing on a mac compared to a pc?

 

You get to spend nearly twice the money for the same performance, no ability to customise and a much smaller software library...?

I posted previously, but it was offensive and subsequently got removed, so I just want to put my voice about this thread forward for people to read.

 

I understand that there are Mac people and there are PC people on this forum and all around the world, and both parties will always have opposing opinions, because they have their own preferences towards each different system, whether it be the usability, control, hardware or even the aesthetic. There's no reason why we can't have a sensible debate about it on the forum, but it's gotten a bit out of hand, and has came down to one thing: personal preference.

 

Most software (not all, not by a longshot) and hardware is developed for both systems now, and both systems produce absolutely unbelievable results for design, due to the developments of both systems over the past decade or so, there's no real competition... they're on par.

 

People may disagree that they're on par, but they really are, the only difference is the price. There is a reason for that, however, and if you've taken Business at all in your life, you'll understand why that is: economies of scale and the niche they have. I'll explain it further, there are loads of different companies that produce PCs with Windows as an Operating System, but only one supplier of Apple computers with OSX installed: Apple. This means that PC manufacturers around the world are purchasing MASSIVE amounts of hardware in bulk, making the product cheaper, the fact that there is an abundance of both manufacturers on the raw side and company side, it reduces prices even more. This is something Apple couldn't really achieve, but if more companies produced laptops with OSX installed, prices would fall... Apple has absolutely no competition of it's OS at all, meaning that they can also up prices to however much they want, even if it does mean over-charging.

 

So there you go, just stop the argument that goes around over and over again, because it's getting boring, and must be for everyone.

It is getting boring. There's always people on every forum who start endless "PC vs. Mac" topics just to annoy others.

 

There are advantages and disadvantages to both platforms and in the end it's a personal choice about what helps you to be more productive.
