My name is Thierry and I'm new to this webdesign thing, here's my work in progress:

Please note that for some reasons the homepage doesn't display well with IE6, I have yet to figure out why.

Anyway I would be more than happy to have your feedback regarding my design and what could be improved.

Pretty aged looking (colours, layout) and your layout is done with tables, which is bad, you should be using CSS (which I see you can use) for layout.

 

Your current HTML has errors, as does your CSS; HTML CSS

 

But because you're new, they're all forgivable

Could you please point out what kind of errors I have with my HTML/CSS since I don't 'see' any error message in Dreamweaver. Is it possible that one of the errors you mentionned could cause my IE6 issue?

 

By the way I started learning HTML and CSS from scratch three months ago and on a part time, that could explain those issues...

I don't mind the colours. Very "sepia-ish" and quite fitting for a photography site.

 

A nice logo at the top would really add to the site.

The errors are validation errors - ie. the code does not conform to the standards laid out by the W3C. You won't see any errors in Dreamweaver for this.

 

I'm guessing the javascript you have is for your image rollovers and is generated by DW. You could easily achieve the same effect with CSS using background image sprites.

Like Helen, I quite like the colours. I also like the reasonable simplicity and the funky font down the sidebar.

 

The site did take quite a long time to load on my mac, and I find my mac generally a lot quicker than my hubby's pc.

 

Most of the links on the sidebar aren't doing anything - I presume this is because it is work in progress?

The Javascript is indeed for the rollover effect. You mentionned using CSS for achieving the same effect but I'm wondering if it offers any advantage to the current Javascript generated by Dreamweaver?

Thanks for your feedback. Yes most of the links are not active yet (beside Photography Basics) because it's still a work in progress. I didn't know there was a difference in browsing speed between a PC and a Mac...

I also think that the colors are bland and need to be replaced. The layout is good and the idea of using gradients where you did is good. I also think that you could probably use your photography more to improve the initial feeling of the site. Maybe use SlideShowPro to show off some things or something.
