September 23, 200818 yr I want to build a website that the work will never end. What i mean is i'm not bad with HTML and CSS and would like to use this amongst other aspects of scripting languages to have as kind of big learning website. Only thing is i cant think of one interesting enough for me to put some commitment in to. I read in a forum to build a fan base website? which was the only one i found maybe of interest. Anyone else tried this way of learning website functions etc? if so any ideas you have i could use?
September 23, 200818 yr Is there a local club or group that you are involved in, that a website may help to promote?
September 23, 200818 yr What are your interests? What do you love to do? For me I love travel so I'd build the world's greatest travel website - there'd be so much scope for functionality and design choices - interactive maps, trip planners, mash-ups from elsewhere, tons of content, forums, chat... the list is endless. I'd also try to make it useful to me at the same time, so that it doesn't feel "pointless". So if I made it something I could journal my thoughts, keep my friends up-to-date, plan my next trip... then it would make me less likely to give up. Pick something you're passionate about to give you the drive to do it and make it useful to you to keep the motivation going. That's my advice!
September 23, 200818 yr I think wizely has said it, pick something you like something you wont get bored of. For me I have started up a web design help site and I am looking to expand my skills and help a few people out
September 23, 200818 yr ... Anyone else tried this way of learning website functions etc?... I always experiment on little functions ... hmm ... here's an example: <?php // GET all links from URL that contain www;) -- First parser experiment by me function remove_html(&$item, $key) { $item=trim(strip_tags($item)); $item=strtolower($item); } function get_links($url) { $preg = "/a[\s]+[^>]*?href[\s]?=[\s\"\']+(.*?)[\"\']+.*?>" ."([^<]+|.*?)?<\/a>/"; preg_match_all(trim($preg), file_get_contents($url), $out, PREG_PATTERN_ORDER); $keys = $out[1]; $values = $out[2]; array_walk($values, 'remove_html'); return (array_unique(array_merge($keys, $values))); } function has_www(&$item) { return (stristr($item, 'www')); } $links = get_links("http://www.example.com"); $linky = array_filter($links,"has_www"); foreach ($linky as $link) { echo "$link <br>"; } ?> It gets some URLs from an address.
September 24, 200818 yr Author Cheers for your input guys, Its true you do need an idea that you have passion about then its not going to be hard working on something you love. Only problem is finding that of what i feel passionate about as there is a few things i feel more or less the same about, I like my football team Manchester united and was thinking of creating a fan base. I also like fishing biking and golf but i see all these as hobbies. Would i like to build a full site on a hobby? I'm not sure. I think i can only carry on trying to think of an idea but with your help i might now find it a bit easier in finding the Right thing to start.
