You what? I find that offensive Video tuts are the best - easiest to learn from. It just feels good to be spoon fed while learning PHP. Makes the process fun and easy.

This would be best done with javascript and Paul Millar just mentioned. If I had a good level of understanding in js, I would've given you an idea on how it done. Wordpress? Very easy to use. Your allowed to manipulate codes to your preference and its not very hard to edit at all. Just need knowledge of PHP. You can purchase magazine themes for about $40 or so
