  1. I think google analytics is ok but i only use it for sites that are commercial so the client can track there own stats. I work for an organisation that primary focus is Science and education and google is in the business of marketing, advertising and sales and even though the visitors are anonymous I don’t think google should know browsing trends of our visitors, I also really need to know paths throught the site which G analytics cant do and with thousands of pages I don’t really want to have to upload the whole site again after adding extra script to the templates. You can get more from the stats from your servers creates and you don’t have to add extra script to the page/s unfortunately its just finding a good stable one. Unfortunately it looks like since the launch of google analytics most good software companies have stoped releasing stats programs, no money in it I guess, responses to this topic have shown me that
  2.    Unit 51 reacted to a post in a topic: Advice please on stats program
  3. Thanks looks pretty good I was trying to stay away from needing to add script to the page like google analytics, I prefer to use the log files that are created off my server and it looks like I can with piwik
  4. Some one has to be using stats programs other than the basic ones included with a hosting package
  5. I have seen this a bit recently especially with a couple of the publications we release, a recent example they downloaded the pdf and hosted it on there own site claiming it was theres, thing is we have a stritch copyright policy on our site and our logo was all over the publication so I didnt take it to well, but a firm polite warning email cc: to the CEO quikly saw it removed and replaced it with an apology. I was recently looking for something (cant remember what) and found that the same exact wording was on about 5 sites does the writter own all those 5 sites I doubt it. I think all sites should have a copyright policy even though its illegal anyway so you have something to point to when you need it
  6. Hi all Im after a good stats program I ended up buying deeplog analyzer pro but it has a database limit of 2 gig after one day the database is over 2 gig so it corrupts, works good on the small sites and really if it didnt have that limit it would be perfect but our main site is the one I need the stats from so I cant use it. I also grabbed Funnel Web Analyzer (Enterprise) 5.0 but the program is old and im sure there has to be better out there
  7. Hi All I added a .htaccess so the site parses php to html the issue I have is the old site where im getting content from has the extension .htm so when I launch the new site that will have all html extensions all external links to our site will be lost I cant use 301 redirect because I would have to redirect more than 5000 pages any thoughts on how to redirect all .htm to the new .html
  8. Thanks Yer im having a look at ip board (seems good for the price) but as the site is only at test stage at the moment im using Mybb Mybb seems to have all the features needed so might even stick with it
  9. Hi all I am getting presure to get a forum attached to works site, any suggestions at what I should be looking at forum software etc, Our host dosnt have one in there package so thats out
  10. cool so I seem to be on the right track so far have taken today off so i can spend a bit of time getting my head around it without getting disturbed every 5 minutes
  11. Hey all I am currently getting my head around the world of PHP (always wanted to but now I dont have a choice) and from doing a bit of research have found that I can install php 5 on my local machine I have come across wamp server which seems to be the most user friendly and has a few extras attached that will come in useful in the future. thing is I still cant view the site as it only comes up text based. any ideas The sites navigation is in PHP mostly but by the looks if I just try and view it, its all text Hope I made sense and thanks for any tips
  12. Cheers mate thanks for your help
  13. Cheers for the info on CMS sounds like a must have as for the doctype the other reason I asked about that is because I was under the impression that I may run in to some hurdles with it being html as it is not technology friendly and requires a bit more coding skill when it comes to adding some more complicated java script or php and even the rss feeds etc (looking at future technology)
  14. yer I had to check and re check when I saw the amount of hits we get, good thing is the previous person kept a good record of stats, page hits etc so im probably going to dump about 25% of the old site when we implement the new site, its a .org but prob really is only just, I would almost call it a .edu CMS? did a quick check and looks like what we might need, do you have experience with CMS? I am starting from scratch 'ABSOLUTE' only content management has been the previous admin checking stats and adding pages for many years if you know what i mean no big deal that's just the way it was done
  15. Well the title says it all but I will give a bit of a reason for me asking and I will try and keep it brief; I administer (just taken over) a site that is absolutely huge and was started back in 1994 so the site is all in html, over a million pages. We are almost at sign of stage (development started before I did) of the new site, but the thing is the designers have created it all in html 4.01 strict and im used to to doing things in xhtml 1.0 transitional, to add my 2 assistants have a very very minimal knowledge of code and all work they will be doing will be through DW 9, my knowledge of code is good but I have to think of the work load and will be needing to pass alot onto them. We will also be implementing things like podcasts, rss feeds, alot of flash etc etc That was keeping the HTML vs XHTML brief also If any one can point me in the right direction for a plan of action for a site this big dam I will have your babies I/we have one but any tips would be great Thank you in advance
