  1. We're a team of 3 x people offering a range of web design / graphic design / seo services and we want to streamline our working systems. I'm looking for a recommendation on software (download or cloud/web-based) that will help us manage projects, tasks, quotes, invoicing all in one place. We all use Macs and at the moment use a combination of Billings, Evernote, Sage Billingboss, Spreadsheets, iCal so as you can see it's all over the place. Don't mind spending a little bit of money per month but obviously want to keep it as low as possible. Have found loads out there but just can't seem to find the right one. Has anyone any recommendations that we could look at? The obvious one would be DAYLITE but seems a bit heavy / pricey for our requirements. Thanks & Regards
  2. I handle quite a few hosting accounts for people (on a reseller account basis) and they're starting to grow considerably. I'm considering trying out clod hosting with a few domains, just as a test to see what all the fuss is about and to gauge the pros / cons of it. I'm not saying I'm going to use it permanently, but I feel that being in the industry I should at least have some experience of Cloud Hosting so I can speak from experience. Has anyone tried Cloud Hosting and if so, who with and what were your experiences? Thanks in advance.
  3. Are you trying to use the toolbar or the menu "view" drop down?
  4. I'm looking to set up a webinar on a site I manage. It doesn't have to be live as it can be recorded beforehand. It will be a free event - people just have to register beforehand and will then be emailed a link. So far so good as I was thinking of simply embedding it on a hidden webpage within the client's current site and then simply emailing the link. There will also be an opportunity to donate to a charity via a paypal link underneath the video on the web page. However the client wants the video to start and end at set times as the intention is to have everyone watching it at the same time. What's the easiest way to go about controlling the start time of the video and ensuring it's only played once?
  5. Well, their charge of £ 40 per month hosting for a start. I will be hosting the site and maintaining/running it myself. So I'm facing the same problem whether I run the site as static or dynamic; getting hold of the current content and replicating it on my servers as easily as possible without rebuilding the whole site. At the moment, when the domain is transferred or dns pointed to myself, I need to have something to upload. Client would pay me for a rebuild but I think that the previous supplier should (morally at least) hand over the content etc.
  6. The site's only about 17 pages so I could always look at the view source code option - I'm just surprised that there isn't an easier way of transferring the site.
  7. Can anyone recommend some good CRM software for running on a macs ? My business partner operates as a graphic designer from one office and myself as web development from another and we're looking for some cost-effective simple CRM software to make our day to day management effective and simplified. Any recommends welcome. Thanks
  8. May be a silly question so please bear with me. I'm about to take on board a new client for whom I will be maintaining their website on a retainer basis. Previously, they have paid a.n.other company £far-too-much per month for a CMS site (which client never uses). Client also wants me to arrange the hosting and set up a static site (I'll just be updating the site myself). Current provider has no problem with transferring the site and hosting across to me in (come the end of the contract) but claims that "due to security issues etc" they can't provide me with copies of the files in order to upload as static files, once account has transferred.. Therefore I'm faced with the prospect of losing the whole existing site contant and effectively building the site from scratch. Is there an easier option?
  9. Hi folks I've come across a client who has an old ecommerce site that needs updating. It was written in asp but the backend is a nightmare, therefore he's asked me to look into a new site for him. I'm more of a frontend developer so I could do with any advice. I've been given 2 x prices from coders that I know; one for building the site in Ruby on rails, the other for using php. The problem is that the ruby coded site would come out at double the cost than the php coded site. Now I know that my ruby coder is very very good and I'm pretty sure the php coder is as well so I'm going to give the client 2 x prices to let him decide. But what in your opinion are the added advantages of rails over php? (I assume there are) But not only from a coding point of view but that the client can see as well? Thanks in advance - you guys always seem to come up with the answers !
  10. For some strange reason Firefox keeps crashing upon opening today - was working fine yesterday and haven't made any changes. I've gone through all the checks - latest version / plugin checks / Apple software updates but no apparent success. I must say the Mozilla support seems a little lacking. Any ideas?

A customer of mine keeps getting an email message when sending / receiving email: Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '451 Please try again later.', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 451, Error Number: 0x800CCC6A Mail is being sent and received although she doesn't seem to be getting all of it. After building her website, I set her up a domain-based email address but she has it on auto-forward to her btinternet.com email. Doesn't seem to be a problem with her blackberry so I'm guessing it's something to do with the email client? I was working perfectly ok for several months until last 2 weeks. Any ideas, greatly appreciated. Thanks
  12. It's a good start - better than my first ever attempt! I just wonder if the text should be a little smaller and a few more images to break it up. Plus the NEWS page is too long, resulting in too much scrolling for me (but it's just my opinion). Good luck
  13. I've come up across some plagiarism which is so blatant, it's rather amusing. There would appear to be a local web designer who has just set up in business near to me. Upon checking through his site (as one does), I notice that his FAQ page has been completely lifted from my own website. "But how can you prove this?" I hear you ask. Well that is because he has failed to change any references to my my company which appear in the FAQ answers. So upon reading the FAQ's not only are they word for word they also give my website details and contact details. So what do I do? Have a polite word with him, send a warning letter, or just sit back and smile as he is giving me some free advertising? To be honest, it's not too much of an issue as I have completely revamped my own site this week which do not include the FAQ section any more. It's a shame really as I could have used some of his developing skills on projects. Any ideas?
  14. Can anyone recommend a PHP Flat File Search script for use on a static website? I want to avoid going down the database route (as it's not really my skill). It's for a commercial customer so I also don't really want to be embedding Google search. It doesn't have to be a free script necessarily. Many thanks
  15. Lots of great info here folks, which is really appreciated. Now for my big question (hey you can tell I've been a pc user) ...... is it really necessary to run anti-virus on a Mac? I see that Guezala states that she uses iantivirus but the rest of you don't mention anything unless I've missed it. I've just had a quick look at iantivirus and it seems to be the mac version offered by PCTools, who I have been using for the last 3 years on my pc. Yet is it really worth running it?
