css background color display problem
Hi, I've got a strange problem that i just can't seem to rectify. I got a basic table structure within a page and i've added a background color to a row. Viewing in ietester the background color displays in ie6 & ie8, but not ie7. I did a test with just the table on a test page and it displays fine, so there is something about the page or css that causing the problem but i just can't see anything obvious. Anyone seen anything like this before or have any suggestions. Regards Tony

another cms question
Hi all, The client has an existing site but wants to follow development of a cms version. So i develop the cms within a folder on the existing server. But when the site is complete and ready to go live how do i then take the files out of the folder, if thats not a stupid question Does the hosting company do that, just a matter of copy and paste, will i have to get the files and then re-upload them (i chuffing hope not) and more importantly i'm thinking that the paths to the database will then not work as the root point has changed. Isn't learning a new way of doing things great cheers Tony

cms development
Hi all, Having pondered moving on to cms for a while i've decided upon Concrete5. I have it installed and ready to go but was after some advice on the best way to develop a site. I'm going to develop locally but i also want the client to see what i'm doing. What i did before was create a folder on my server space and put the site here. But with cms i wasn't sure whether this would work with having to move it to its own server when finished and how much changing i would need to do. I don't want to develop in in the live environment so everyone can see. How do you do yours? Cheers Tony

An Aspiring Web Geek
Hi Welcome, I'm new to this too. I live near York, was medically discharged from the RAf a couple of years ago and took it up as a hobby more than anything. I learned html and css but i find it hard learning from books, someone giving tuition would be much better. I want to learn to produce php and cms websites next but keep putting it off. Techniques and coding move on so fast that its hard to keep up. Cheers Tony

Site Design on a Mac
Hi all, I converted to the Mac a few months ago and have yet to feel comfortable with the browser testing. I test safari and firefox and then upload files to a server then open up Vmware Fusion and use IEtest for IE6,7,8. I've found that IEtest doesn't display as it would if i were using the actual browser so i'm not completely confident with that. I find myself going on a laptop to view IE which is a real pain. Theres got to be an easier way, any Mac users kindly give their method of doing this. Or is this the price we pay for being superior Mac users Cheers Tony

Help with IE 6 Hacks, please?
Hi Christy, Something i learned the other day is that although IE6 cannot display PNG24 images it can display PNG8 images. Alternatively create a javascript file with the following and call it something like pngfix.js: var arVersion = navigator.appVersion.split("MSIE") var version = parseFloat(arVersion[1]) if ((version >= 5.5) && (document.body.filters)) { for(var i=0; i<document.images.length; i++) { var img = document.images var imgName = img.src.toUpperCase() if (imgName.substring(imgName.length-3, imgName.length) == "PNG") { var imgID = (img.id) ? "id='" + img.id + "' " : "" var imgClass = (img.className) ? "class='" + img.className + "' " : "" var imgTitle = (img.title) ? "title='" + img.title + "' " : "title='" + img.alt + "' " var imgStyle = "display:inline-block;" + img.style.cssText if (img.align == "left") imgStyle = "float:left;" + imgStyle if (img.align == "right") imgStyle = "float:right;" + imgStyle if (img.parentElement.href) imgStyle = "cursor:hand;" + imgStyle var strNewHTML = "<span " + imgID + imgClass + imgTitle + " style=\"" + "width:" + img.width + "px; height:" + img.height + "px;" + imgStyle + ";" + "filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader" + "(src=\'" + img.src + "\', sizingMethod='scale');\"></span>" img.outerHTML = strNewHTML i = i-1 } } } refer to the file in the <head>: <!--[if IE]> <script defer type="text/javascript" src="pngfix.js"></script> <![endif]--> Be aware that this will not work if the PNG is a background image of a div only if embeded. Hope this is helpful Cheers Tony

Help with IE 6 Hacks, please?
Hi, IE6 is great isn't it? The best way i find around IE6 problems is to create an IE specific CSS file. Add this to the <head> of the document: <!--[if IE6]> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="ieonly.css" /> <![endif]--> hope this helps cheers Tony

Simple question - Windows or Mac?
Hi, Your in the position i was in 6 months ago. I'd been a pc user for 20 years, but fed up with having to rebuild hard drives, windows crashes, having to constantly clean crap of the hard drive, the list goes on. Friends of mine are Mac users and have been laughing at me for years. My main concern was having to change to mac versions of my software, getting to know a new OS, creating websites etc etc. I took the plunge, and yes i havn't looked back, its chuffing brilliant, not had a single glitch. Yes i replaced a couple of software title i use the most and also bought Vmware Fusion which allows you to run windows programmes in a virtual enviroment, it works brilliantly. I use IEtest in the windows environment to test sites for explorer, its a slightly longer way of doing things but the benefits of the Mac far outway that. No problems with viruses, no need to clean the hard drive, system is quiet as a mouse, and the monitor is the best i've ever had. Only took a couple of days to get fluent with the OS differences. It feels horrible now when i have to use a pc. Hope this helps, they are right . . . you will not look back. Cheers Tony

IE6 png fix help
Hi All, I have this script for using png graphics in IE6. Its referenced with <!--[if IE]> <script defer type="text/javascript" src="pngfix.js"></script> <![endif]--> The problem is that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't which i can't work out why. Can anyone shed some light on this or suggest a more reliable solution. I have to consider IE6 as the site is for a company. var arVersion = navigator.appVersion.split("MSIE") var version = parseFloat(arVersion[1]) if ((version >= 5.5) && (document.body.filters)) { for(var i=0; i<document.images.length; i++) { var img = document.images var imgName = img.src.toUpperCase() if (imgName.substring(imgName.length-3, imgName.length) == "PNG") { var imgID = (img.id) ? "id='" + img.id + "' " : "" var imgClass = (img.className) ? "class='" + img.className + "' " : "" var imgTitle = (img.title) ? "title='" + img.title + "' " : "title='" + img.alt + "' " var imgStyle = "display:inline-block;" + img.style.cssText if (img.align == "left") imgStyle = "float:left;" + imgStyle if (img.align == "right") imgStyle = "float:right;" + imgStyle if (img.parentElement.href) imgStyle = "cursor:hand;" + imgStyle var strNewHTML = "<span " + imgID + imgClass + imgTitle + " style=\"" + "width:" + img.width + "px; height:" + img.height + "px;" + imgStyle + ";" + "filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader" + "(src=\'" + img.src + "\', sizingMethod='scale');\"></span>" img.outerHTML = strNewHTML i = i-1 } } } cheers tony

display html table within xml document
Hi JMC, Great information thank you. i'm still confused (no surprise there then :-) ) i'm probably not explaining myself very well I need to display the table within an existing xml file which has its own styling, so the php won't work or will it, i grasp the xslt use to style the table within an xml file, but i don't want to style the whole document with it just the table which is the bit that doesn't want to work. cheers tony

display html table within xml document
Hi, i have an xml page that i want to display a table of information on and style the table i just want to do it in the most effecient way. i don't understand xml parsee so i'm struggling (you have to start somewhere) i did a search on the net and tried unsuccessfully to get anything i found to work, i'm considering to just create an image of the table and be done with it but then i'd never learn how to do it. this is the page i want to display the table in: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <xmlObject> <contentWidth>800</contentWidth> <contentHeight>800</contentHeight> <contentBgColor>0x0c0c0c</contentBgColor> <contentBgOpacity>1</contentBgOpacity> <scrollBaseColor>0x2e2e2e</scrollBaseColor> <scrollerColor>0x656565</scrollerColor> <displayImages>true</displayImages> <displayHtmlArticles>true</displayHtmlArticles> <displaySlideShow>false</displaySlideShow> <!-- BACK BUTTON --> <image> <x>680</x> <y>16</y> <imageURL>site_images/backToArticles.png</imageURL> <includeLargeImage>false</includeLargeImage> <largeURL></largeURL> <includeVideo>false</includeVideo> <videoURL></videoURL> <videoWidth></videoWidth> <videoHeight></videoHeight> <includePageLink>true</includePageLink> <page>05</page><!-- back button can only go back to the page it came from--> </image> </xmlObject> any help appreciated cheers tony
