Fractal Fragger reacted to roothost in Best way to have a centered web pageWhy the need for tables??

Just for the record, the use of tables for layout is bad practice.

Ignore these petty bastards. They're just jumped up hobos who think that making websites is some sort of "profession" LOL.

Fractal Fragger got a reaction from Renaissance-Design in Greetings From FractalFraggerHello Everyone!
I came across this website a while ago and registered but i normally dont make introductions, but i thought Mmm may as well.
Well this is me; I'm a self taught web designer from a small town called Bridgend in South Wales UK. I currently work as a 2nd line support technical support analyst, so im am very tech orientated.
I am currently self taught in HTML (v5 standard), CSS (v3 Standard), XHTML, some Javascript, PHP. I also am competent in VB.NET, some Java and VBS.
I am currently trying to freelance my skills out as a hobby.
So if anyone needs some assistance then please feel free to ask me, if i can assist then i will.
Regards

Fractal Fragger reacted to Gibson in Lacking inspiration99% Perspiration, 1% inspiration - remember?
When devoid of inspiration which is probably quite often, just get to chugging stuff around, trying different things, combinations etc. - sometimes you even find something by accident that'll work, in fact quite often.
In other words, the inspiration is generated by the perspiration.
Anyway, inspiration's overrated in my opinion. I think the thing is if you hang around too long for "inspiration" you never get anything done. Sometimes you just have to make it look professional without much inspiration at all.
Think about say a tattoo artist doing custom work. They chug it out, everyone's happy with it but a lot of it is very similar or based on something they've done in the past. What you pay for is the quality and professional polish of the product.
How many people on here can say that every design they do is some kind of groundbreaking "inspired" design - I'm guessing the majority of the work is well turned out reworks of other stuff, usually done in the past by that designer.
You've got certain "standard" techniques. Run through those and see what happens. Sometimes it's just a grind.
Failing that, learn some new techniques just for the sake of it and apply them. See what happens.

Fractal Fragger reacted to Digidoodle_Ben in Newbie in the world of web designThanks Fractal Fragger.
Some sound advice there. Building a codebase is definitely a great piece of advice for the future and something I hadn't thought of. What are the best sources for online tutorial, ones with up to date standards? I've looked at Tuts+ (which I like), and Treehouse.

Fractal Fragger reacted to adamsmith in htaccess neededTry this...
Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9]+)*$ index.php?page=$1 [NC]
I think that should work, it should also work for anything such as offer54 and will take the user to ?page=offer54
