  1. You might also find some more information here where people were explaining to me about this: http://www.webdesignerforum.co.uk/topic/39713-what-doctype-to-use-if-using-htmlcss-codes-and-want-to-make-tables/page__p__251270__fromsearch__1#entry251270
  2. Hi I am making a static website, using only with HTML. So my files all have the extension .html. So on my website a page will have the URL for example "mysite.com/menu.html". I see however that other sites have no file extension showing up in the URL. (for example the URL of a page can be "mysite.com/menu". How can they do that?
  3. Hi I wanted to ask if it's possible to make a page load a random image from a list of images without using Javascript or PHP. Basically I want to do this using only HTML or CSS. Is that possible? thanks
  4. Do you have access to edit the website? Also have you noted anywhere on the website that it's copyrighted to your name?
  5. Hi thanks very much this works! As a final request I wanted to ask if you could check my final stylings in my <head> section to tell me if you see any mistake in the order of my styles. Note that I do have a separate stylesheet file, I was just too thick to understand. In my stylesheet I added the code #special-txt { display: none; } and in my html head section I have: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css"> <style type="text/css"> div { border: 1px solid #000000; } </style> <!--[if lt ie 7]> <style type="text/css"> img#special-img { display: none; } </style> <![endif]--> <!--[if lt ie 7]> <style type="text/css"> #special-txt { display: inline; } </style> <![endif]--> </head> I checked in all browsers that interest me and everything seems to work fine, but can you see any mistake/untidiness? thanks
  6. Then maybe s/he can make a page on that domain that says "We have moved, please go here". I'm not sure if this a good idea I'm just making suggestions that you guys may have forgotten.
  7. Hi I appreciate you helping me. Actually I do want the mentioned id element to dissapear from all browsers including safari, etc, and all IE ones except from IE less than 7. You said to put "display: none in the main stylesheet", but how exactly do I do this?
  8. Just to remind in case you forgot you could also keep the old domain, for its traffic and links, and also get the new domain and make the old one redirect to the new one. Also I think a domain name is a good thing to pay attention to, not just for Google's or other SE's ranking but also for aesthetic reasons and for being easy to remember etc. Personally I would get a hold of a few of these domains, since they are really cheap to buy, and I would think of one to use as the "canonical" (to make the others redirect to this). An you could always set a different one as the canonical later on. Another tip to help you chose is to first check if any of the mentioned domains are already taken, as some of them seem to be, unless your client is the one who has them. Also in my opinion you should try to keep the URL aesthetically good, as it would make it look more "prefessional", rather than trying to fit into it many keywords (though people could disagree with this). So I wouldn't take the one's with the city's name in. Personally I would go for jsplumbing.co.uk or for johnsmith.co.uk or for johnsmithplumbing.co.uk if these are not already taken.
  9. Yes! The first part works. I thought it would be much more difficult to do this. But for the second part (to make text appear only in IE < 7, the text that I am giving id to does appear in IE > 7. My code is the following (an is at the last part of my <head> section: <!--[if lt ie 7]> <style type="text/css"> img#dissappearinie5n6 { display: none; } </style> <![endif]--> <!--[if lt ie 7]> <style type="text/css"> #appearinie5n6 { display: inline; } </style> <![endif]--> </head> The text I'm trying to make appear only in IE<7 is this: <p id="#appearinie5n6">Hello</p> I also tried with "block" instead of "inline" as you told me but it didn't work. Am I doing something wrong?
  10. Hi I have an image that is positioned fixed on my site and in the case of Internet Explorer 5 and 6, instead of being positioned where I want it, it appears on the left top corner of screen. I don't want to make "hacks" to make it work as postion fixed in IE5 & 6, as I think this seems a bit too complicated, at least for me. What I want instead is a code that when my site loads in IE 5 or 6, the mentioned image dissapears all together. Is that possible and realtively simple to do? EDIT: Also what about making some text appear only in IE5 and 6? Is that possible? thanks
  11. Also, in regards to the fact that fixed positioning does not work for IE 6 and downwards, I wanted to ask if there's a way to make this image get position absolute when in these browsers (at the same place on the page). In other words to write a code that sais that in all browsers be position:fixed, while from IE6 and downwards be position:absolute. Is there a way to do that? thansks
  12. Hi thanks for the responces. It is IE version 8. After you told me that for you it works, I tried it again with just that code and it worked. But when I put in my other content it doesn't. By removing elements one by one I found this to be causing the problem: <!--===================--> <!--Copyright (c) 2010 --> <!--===================--> As I'm sure you understand I added this to show that it's copyright content. I added it on the far top of the page before anything else -before the DOCTYPE and the <head> stuff. But if it's causing trouble that means that's not the right place to put that. So where should I put it? thanks
  13. IE just puts the element on the top left corner of the page. I don't have my website online yet to give a link. So I can't do the effect I want in IE?
  14. Hi I am trying to position fixed some image on my site however it doesn't show correctly in I.E. My current code is: <img src="image.jpg"; style="position:fixed; right:20px; top:200px"/> How can I make this work in IE?
  15. thanks B2F. I do have some knowledge with CSS but not a lot. I am trying to replicate my table design with CSS now. How can I make an outlining border around the div? Also how could I make there be dividing horizontal line separating a div into two sections?
  16. Hi I had a website and now I deleted it to make a new one, on a new domain. I have two questions: 1] My old website has been "cached" and can still be viewed on a Google search. When is this going to end? Are they going to be deleted after Google's crawlers find out that my website has been deleted? And when should I expect this to happen? 2] What if, on my new website, on my domain, I put material (copied-pasted) from my old website. Are Google's (or some other major SE) crawlers gonna think that there's something "scammy" about my new website and "rank me down" or whatever you call it? Thanks!
  17. Wow I just saw all these answers, I thought my problem was fixed after my second message. What do you guys mean with laying out a website in tables? Please explain me. I discovered how to make tables and I thought they look cool on my website. I use them on my first page to write news about my website, for example each "new" has its own table. Is something wrong with that? I didn't understand what you guys mean.
  18. Nevermind I got it, my mistake was something else (in some instances I forgot to put the <tr> before opening a <td>
  19. Hi I am making a website with HTML and CSS. I wanted to make tables so I use a code like: <table> <tr> <td> Welcome! </td> <td> This is my website! </td> </tr> </table> I want to validate its HTML but HTML Validator says that it's not allowed to use the <td> tags with the DOCTYPE I am using; the DOCTYPE I'm using is <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd"> What DOCTYPE should I be using?
  20. Actually you'll think I'm an idiot but I haven't added the JS code just before </body> as you said, but before the last body code, which is a code for a footer. So I tried adding it as the complete last code of body, as you suggested, and now the problem completely disappeared. And there are still no obvious side-effects. Thanks a lot.
