Thanks for the replies. Yeah I think one brand is probably the only realistic way. I also want to start a drawing channel on YouTube so having to graphic design businesses on top of that would be waaay too much work.

I recently decided to narrow my focus as regards to graphic design. I realized that I wasn't making any real headway being an all round logo designer as there are so many different directions to go in. So I decided to focus specifically on calligraphy and custom lettering. I also like to create mascots and vector illustrations too which I'm already fairly accustomed to already but I'm trying to decide if I want to make the custom lettering a separate brand from my vector illustration. The downside is that I'd have to make a separate website, twitter, facebook, youtube etc. but I like the idea of having a brand that's purely dedicated to custom lettering and calligraphy as I think it's quite a different area and target audience to vector illustration even though there is some crossover. I'd really like to hear what you guys would do in my position. I might just be complicating things by trying to have two different brands but I don't know...

Yeah I definitely agree - you can only really be a 'master' in context of how you compare with others who are in your field and even then they'll always be ways you can improve. Web design is definitely an area where you need multiple skills which is why I abandoned it pretty fast lol. All the coding and having to make things work for multiple devices just made me think I got into it way too late. Red Bubble looks a really cool site. I agree completely. I think lettering is a great field to master as it can apply to almost any area of graphic design. I find when I design logos I'll often just cycle through a bunch of fonts until I find one that I think looks good for the particular job, which is a really lazy and unrewarding way of doing things. I've been looking at some custom lettering online on places like dribbble and behance and it's really inspiring. I've been having a discussion with someone another another forum about the subject of being a jack of all trades vs master of something and they are firmly opposed to that concept, thinking that you can actually be a master of a lot of things. I'm not sure I 100% agree with that. I think if you have an awful lot talent and motivation then you can be extremely skilled in multiple areas but for me personally I'd rather narrow my focus

Yeah the logos I have created are not that bad but my issue isn't really with that, it's more with how much I struggle with design briefs and knowing which direction to go. I'm happy with my decision to pursue lettering anyhow as it gives me more focus and something clear to work towards. I was reading an interesting post last night on being a master of one thing vs jack of all trades when it comes to design and it definitely solidified the idea in my mind of the direction I want to take. To be honest it's more the process of logo design that discourages me more than the competition and low prices. There are always going to be people out there offering work at silly prices but if you're able to offer quality then you can charge appropriately. It's funny that you mention about learning your craft, that's the problem that I've been having with logo design - because there are so many different types of logo that you can make I don't really feel that I've been learning anything substantial since I never know what direction to pursue. Take the example of the logo I'm having to make at the moment that I mentioned in the other thread - I got more information from the client and asked them for some logos that they like and I'm no more enlightened. Some of the information they provided was frankly ridiculous and made no sense. Anyway I was thinking long and hard about what direction to pursue yesterday and I came to a concrete decision that I'd like to focus on learning custom lettering and calligraphy. It's something I've always admired and think I'd be good at. Plus this way I can still design logos but take the brainstorming/guesswork out of it, which is what I really hate. I think that combined with doing mascots and vector illustration is definitely where I'm going to focus from now on. PS do you mind if I PM with the brief I got for the logo design I mentioned in the other thread? You seem like you have a lot of experience with logo design so you might able to advise me

Ever since I first decided to start working in web design/graphic design field a couple of years ago, I've been trying to narrow down what I'd be best suited to. At first I decided I wanted to do web design but quickly discovered that I don't like coding and all the fiddly issues with browser problems, mobile compatibility etc. Then I decided I'd go into graphic design as I am quite artistically inclined anyway. However after about 18 months of considering myself a 'logo designer' I think I've come to the conclusion that it's not for me. When I see all the great logo designers out there I start to realize that I'm not at the level and won't be any time soon. The fact that logo design is open to interpretation and can essentially be anything when you start a project is something I find crippling rather than liberating. That combined with the fact that there is now more competition than ever with designers from all round the world offering logo design at ridiculously cheap prices on sites like Fiverr, I've realised that to be able to charge well for it I'd have to be world class and I'm just not motivated enough to improve to that level. It's actually quite liberating to rule out logo design as it's been weighing on my mind for a long time since I set the intention to do it and have felt obligated ever since. Something I do really enjoy is vector illustration and character design as you have a much more concrete idea of what you should be doing when compared to logos. I've had it in my mind for a long time that before I can really start making money as a graphic designer I have to have a brilliant portfolio of logos but I'm going to abandon that idea and just focus on designing mascots and other vector illustration since I'm much more inclined to do that well. Thanks guys, you're right. It's definitely my fault for not insisting on more information from the start. I see now that it's ridiculous for me to have attempted to build a logo on the brief of 'student focused'. I just hope the client doesn't get snippy and think I'm trying to get them to do the job for me. I'll update how it goes

I've been commissioned to design a logo but I'm having trouble figuring what angle to come at it from. The design brief I have is merely that the logo be 'student focused'. The site is offering student discounts for tickets and meals etc. I've tried designing a few text-based logos and such but the client isn't happy with any of them so far. Any advice on how best to generate some fresh ideas on this one?

I have my main site hosted by Behance Prosite. I want to have a wordpress blog on a subdomain ie blog.mysite.com How would I go about doing that? It's confusing me because normally I'd just create the subdomain in hostgator and install wordpress there but since the main site is hosted by Behance I don't know how to go about it. Would be very grateful for any advice

A lot of the clients I deal with are very focused around ebay and there's a lot of demand for ebay templates. I am more focused on graphic design than coding so if anyone has experience with ebay templates let me know as there is a lot of work to be had

I just want to code a very simple image for my blogger blog. My coding skills are very rusty so I'm not sure how to go about it. I just want it as a piece of html code that I can paste into the blog. I want each of the social media icons to link to the relevant page (I know how to do that) but I'm not sure how to have the font as part of the same bit of code without using CSS To put it simply I'd like to code the image below without CSS I'd be very grateful to anyone who can help

Cool just don't don't stay too long or you'll get sucked into the vortex! lol One other thing I forgot to mention in my original ramblings was that they take $1 for every 5 you make, take into account paypal fees and you end up with under £2.50 a gig. They also keep your money for 2 weeks (no explanation is given for why) so yeah..not the best way to make money online.

Yeah the only reason I signed up in the first place was to offer fun things that took a couple of minutes like doing face replacement on photoshop. Once you get a few orders it becomes quite addictive to keep adding gigs and getting orders but after a while you realise I'm doing massive amounts for work for very little money. I'm new to web/graphic design so I thought it'd be a good way to learn whilst learning a little bit of money but it actually ends up hindering your progress as you get overwhelmed and have no time to really improve at anything. Oh well. It was a learning experience if nothing else.

I've been using the website Fiverr for the last 8 months and just thought I'd give my views on it. Well after 8 months I've finally come to the conclusion that it's just not worth it. I managed to make a good amount of money on there, especially in the last 4 months as I got more established but the amount of stress and rude people you have to put up with for such a paltry amount per gig means it becomes a thankless task. I have mostly been doing writing gigs on there as well as stuff like simple graphic design and some SEO stuff. Although I think the site is great in theory, the trouble is that it creates an environment where people get tempted to sell services that are worth way more than $5. inevitably these are the gigs that attract the most attention. The biggest culprit for this type of gig is logo design. There are thousands of people offering logo design on there and even the ones that are ranked right at the top of the search results have tonnes of bad feedback from people who expected miracles. You could say it's the seller's fault in the first place for even offering a service such as logo design so cheaply or you could say the buyers shouldn't expect so much for so little. Either way it's going to happen. There is a massive demand for cheap logo design which you can see just by looking at the requested gigs on there. This isn't the only example. I personally tried to offer gigs that I felt I'd be happy to do for $5 but its incredibly tricky to think of such a thing. If you think about it, for someone who wants to make a decent living, $5 is about 10-15 mins work at the very most. How many jobs can be done well in that amount of time? The answer is very few. Unless you have some natural talent that sets you apart from others. Being able to do good voiceovers would be one example. The other thing is when you're providing services so cheaply it feels like a huge slap in the face when someone leaves you a bad feedback, especially when you know you went above and beyond. One of the gigs I used to offer was brainstorming names for companies. I had one person who I must have spent hours working with to try and come up with a name he'd like. At the end I'd come up with more than 50 names for them to choose from. You might think after all this effort the person would think, 'well even if I don't like any of the names, at least he tried'. Nope. He simply left a feedback saying 'didn't like'. Eventually it gets to the point where you realist unless you can offer some highly automated service that people want regularly then it just becomes too much of a grind. I know many people who went on there, like me, with good intentions and after a few weeks decided it's not worth the hassle. I'm glad I decided to close my account as it gives me time to focus on improving my skills instead of running on a hamster wheel constantly for $5 per gig. I think Fiverr is a great site in concept but in reality it falls short. I'd be interested to hear about other people's experiences with Fiverr. If you read all that well done Chris

I just purchased a theme for a new design blog I want to set up from theme forest. I liked the look of it and thought I'd just customise a few things to suit. But now I've installed it it's basically just a skeleton with all the elements missing. I realise it's probably me being incredibly stupid due to having no experience with Wordpress but I'd like to just get it set up how it was when I saw it on theme forest. Is it possible to do that or is this just how all wordpress themes are?

I'm trying to animate a logo in after effects. What I want to do is super simple but unfortunately I'm brand new to the program. All I want to do is make the text appear with some kind of fade in effect and then make the three bars appear one after the other from smallest to largest. Can anyone give me pointers on how to do this? I'd be happy to pay someone if not. Would incredibly simple for someone who knows how to use AE

Thanks for the suggestions but a lot of that went over my head lol - I have set the attributes that I want to be searchable in quick search now. I notice a lot of their items have no meta title or descriptions so I tried adding them and making those attributes searchable in quick search but still no luck. Can you just explain to me in layman's terms how to do these two things you mentioned - "all DB tables are in utf-8 (if one has somehow accidentally got switched to ucs2 it'll arse up fulltext searching) " "It's also worth checking the ft_min_word_len and ft_max_word_len MySQL system variables." I would be very grateful
