  1. Im no expert. But, yes. If you are trading, absolutely, regardless of being at school, uni, or employed elsewhere.
  2. I would think about a one off fee, that included the install, template development, and x numbers of hours training at the clients base. Then provide them with a hourly rate for support after that initial session, and a hourly rate for "development" time as well. I expect it may also depend on what the purpose of the site is, what aspect of joomla are they utillising? If its the user-management, and they intend on having a few 1000 users, you could be on the phone every day. If, however they are simply wanting to update some content once a month, it should be less troublesome for you! Im sure others will disagree - horses for courses to a certain extent.
  3. So, like you, ive been plugging away at my web design business for a few years now. Modest office, some good clients, some bad ones, and some great ones. Just under 50 domains hosted, and a steady flow of work. I also do outsourced work for a local web-design agency, who over time i have built up a great relationship with. Recently they have offered me a full time permanent position. Yikes. Obviously this would involve migrating my client base to them for a suitable remuneration. Does anyone have any experience of "selling clients" what methods could i use to value the client, and therefore what i should be looking at sellingl them for. This is one issue. The other issue is do i want too!? Maybe the idea of having people to talk too is reason enough - rather than talking to myself all day! Any comments?
  4. Agh this sucks. I hate late/non-payers. Some people seem to think because our work is not tangible, then its ok. Anway try this http://www.thomashiggins.com/ I have never used them, I have only heard about their services. Send them the details of your debtor, and for £2 they send them a "letter before action" Again: not a recommendation simply a suggestion, i have no idea who/what they are, i have never used them myself!!!
  5. Hi Dan, Thanks for the reply. Hmm, yes frustratingly - 99% of those error were thrown up by the editor i am using for the admin side of the site. So its content generated by the 'client' . Ive corrected all the errors on that specific product, and also the browse box issue. The problem seems to be resolved it. I think...for now! Although i also change the DocType, which i dont really understand yet. I suspect this may have been the real problem.
  6. Im working on a site at the moment, and ive noticed a little yellow box at the bottom of IE thats says: Done but with errors on the page: Line 2, Char 1 Error: Syntax error Code: 0 I only get this erro in IE, rather than FF etc. Could anyone shed any light... http://www.sos-swim.co.uk/detail-item_id-308 Thanks
  7. I site ive been working on for a few weeks seems to be on a go slow, in IE 6 and 7 on PC. Firefox on the PC seems fine. Everything on the mac seems fine too. Its just my friend IE. Its a recent development - im sure its been fine uptill now. So a broad question - is there anything that could be causing the slowness, in just IE ? Many thanks Dave
  8. MMMMMmmmmmm, bamboo invoice is super slick! Up and running in less than an hour, does all i need, and little bit more. Thanks for the pointer!
  9. Excel has worked fine, i Just get frustrated typing clients address each time, i know its petty, but time is money! Ive just stumbled across a similar thread below (sorry). Im not sure i want an online system, Nothing quite like a printed invoice to encourage payment! But im on macs here, so maybe it would be easier.
  10. Hi All Good news!! My invoices are going out at a greater rate now, i think i need to enhance the systems i use to generate them. So i currently use a combination of excel spreadsheets, word etc etc - im sure you can imagine. As a result i have saved copies of every invoice ever generated. Seems a little excessive, and its cumbersom to maintain. I started trying to create an Access database, but soon got bored! Does anyone have suggestions for a simple Customer - Job - Invoice bit of kit. It must be a standard thing!? Thanks Dave
  11. hmmm, this seems to tick all my boxes!! Nail on the head! Thanks very much for the tip, next - to master the art of a good newsletter design....
  12. Does anyone have any experience with running a good/bad email campaign? A client of mine has a large client base, and they have asked me to run a "newsletter" type email on a monthly basis. Rather like this site sends us each month. Ben where are you!? From my rather brief research i have found a few solutions: 1) web based companies (dotmailer for example) who offer a service, at a substantial price! 2) cheap nasty software, thats free to download (hmmm makes me suspicious) Is there anything in-between!? Naturally the concerns are getting my clients domain blacklisted, is this possible from sending 700 emails a month!? Delivery percentage. Any comments?
  13. Hi folks, i have little project here, which im struggling to get my head around. Im using PHP and wish to create a simple system to make bookings (onto courses) However - im not after "code" rather the method i should implement, or the logic. The situation is this Courses are run over a given time, say 4 weeks. Over those 4 weeks, the course will occur on given days each week, this may vary. i.e Week 1 - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Week 2 - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Week 3 - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Week 1 - Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. simple. The cost of booking a day is £10 (for example) However book 4 days or more, within any week, and only pay £35 Discount does not apply if the 4 days, or more comprises of days from different weeks. I cant think how to (neatly!) allow users to select which days they wish to attend (with no restrictions on quantity, eg book 1 day, or book the lot!) and then process, the " are any days within the same week, if so, count those days, and do the maths" function. i cant see beyond the checkboxes per day, and those results in an array. My use of functions relating to arrays in limited so maybe im missing something obvious. Could anyone suggest a way to get by ball rolling!!??? Sorry for the long post. Dave
  14. Hi Daemon, thanks for the reply - thats reassuring!
  15. Hi Penguin, Thanks for the quick reply. Your thoughts echo mine somewhat, and i feel they are a little grumpy as a result of not getting the next years hosting contract, which was absurdly high! Here is a quote from the orginal site The content (content being images, text, sound and video files, programs and scripts) of this website is copyright © "xxxx" (xxx being my client) Are you suggesting its a clients responsibility to ensure the legality of their site?
  16. Hello folks, This is my first post on this site.... I'am a relatively inexperienced freelance designer - possibly in a spot of bother. I was approached by a company at the begining of this year, i was asked to modfiy their existing website. The changes were minor, and related to the aspethics of the site. They are running a fairly need CMS. This week "they" (my client) recieved an email from the company who did the original work, stating these changes had broken copyright law, and violated his Intellectual Property. Needless to say this is a little worrying! However, the original site had the © symbol, 2006 and the name of my client - suggesting to me they own the copyright. Also in the footer was a line designed and hosted by xxxx (the original designer) I left this line in tact. Any sugestions as to what my next move should be, have i broken copyright laws? Im a little confused, and feel responsible to sort this for my client. Many thanks
