Have you got his live so i can see it working with the img from what i can see is your putting the bg on the <li> but on hover not changing the <li> bg but adding one to the <a> thats why the position will be different put the unselected bg on the <a> instead of the <li>

Do you want to do this using an image for the top border or css for the border ? If the first just use you img as a bg on the <a> dont need the spans and swap color and bg on hover/active

Seems to be a overflow:hidden bug on safari can you add to .nivoSlider img border-radius:10px see if that works as a quick fix

try adding float:left to .testimonials-tab .author and the play around with margins to suit
