Pulling my hair out with this, not entirely sure what I'm missing. I'm working on my portfolio and I'm having trouble with my div vertical alignment. They're set to inline-block for horizontal scrolling (anything else messes up big time), but the pivots/origins/scaling directions of the divs are just all over the place, and I have no idea why. My temp divs in the below rows are fine, but I don't know why, maybe it's to do with differently scaled assets pushing others out of line? The site is here: http://kodie.me/test/ . All the jquery stuff is thoroughly documented, since otherwise I have to keep spending half an hour remembering what stuff does every 40 minutes. Here are some illustrations on my woes:

I never even knew about CSS animation. From my research, it seems I can only use CSS3 for animation and it seems a bit more complicated and less limiting, so the only advantage it would have is possibly being less expensive, though I honestly don't know if it is, and supporting modern browsers with javascript specifically turned off.

After getting some feedback from another forum, I've made a quick mockup of a new design. First there's a full screen animation thing with a projector screen in a room with my showreel youtube video on. As you scroll down, the project images fills your whole screen and there's a little animated me in the corner, with a speech bubble giving a small bit of info on the project. After you scroll past the first piece, I start to scroll down with you, changing poses sometimes and making talking mouth movements when you get to the next piece. There's still plenty of animation, but it's much less distracting from the projects themselves, which now take up the entire screen.

I am the cartoon character, which is animated at 12FPS by switching the SVG images using JavaScript. The main content (images with links to more detail/bigger views/full project) is on the tablet, which can be controlled by scroll wheeling anywhere or the scrollbar, which I'm unsure if I should put on the main window, or in the tablet too. The tablet is probably going to be a frame, very slightly rotated, so it looks a bit more natural. There's overlapping, animated, foreground elements over the tablet, which should be easy enough to manipulate when animating the background too. My speech bubble is just a short description of the image current on the screen. I'm hoping to try and smartly crop the window to focus in on the main content when the window is resized, to fit with a variety of devices. If the screen is too small, then the tablet content will be square on the page, disabling everything else, and the bubble will be just below; this can also be used as a selectable mode. The entire page may be able to resize some amount, maybe. Now there's a lot of stuff that could go wrong with this. The animation script may be way too intensive, my idea was to either continually swap the SVG images based on whatever animation is being played every 12th of a second, or make a giant SVG spritesheet and crop it every 12th of a second instead. I'm assuming SVG is compatible with most modern browsers and devices, as well as all that other ****e I'm going to have to program. My main worry is that the animation might be too resource heavy on older machines or the such. My main audience is probably animation and game studios, of which I would assume most have decent enough computers, kept updated. I think SVG compatibility is probably my bottleneck on supporting older devices. I could use any criticism on colours, style, how feasible this is, what I could do to achieve some of my goals, the appropriateness of it, and anything really.

Every time I give the link out, I feel a little bit guilty for subjecting them to my website. I tried playing around with the design a bit, trying to focus more on my artistic stuffs. There's four pages, a contact page, still art, animation and design. When you click a navigation button it sort of swipes itself over the bottom layer which holds the content of the current page. When it's swiped over completely, then the content is loaded into the bottom layer and the top layer disappears. My main thoughts about it were to keep it simple, clean, easy to navigate, and to look really cool. I tried experimenting a bit with golden spirals and ratios, don't know if that's apparent, and a minimal palette.

I submitted a thread a while ago asking for opinions on my portfolio site (melior.bioviral.net) and it was very helpful. It's quite an old site now, so I think a complete redesign is in order, and I might as well redesign it since I have to recode the entire thing anyway, to get rid of all the Flash (I was very much in love with Flash as a child). Anyway, some things which may not be immediately obvious: No Flash, everything will be written in Javascript and HTML I will have an actual domain name, maybe two. I've included the good with the bad. For some reason I've had a bit of designer's block recently, hoping your feedback will help clear that up. I'm hoping to include a bunch of fancy, smooth animations for transitions between pages. I'm merging Design and Web, so I only have Art, Design and Animation pages, although I think I may have some sub pages or something. There is no seventh bullet point. That is in fact, exactly what I intend to do! I tried to buy kodie.co.uk a few days ago when it was expiring but some magazine company decided to renew it and do nothing with it forever. What would be more helpful now is criticism on my latest site, www.visionguardmonitoring.com . I've actually learnt a lot about design, development and javascript from this one site. For one thing, I'm never using frames again. This is very helpful, I'll take this into consideration next time I build a site.

Whoops, completely forgot I posted this. Thanks for your feedback, I'm probably going to redesign my site in a month or two with that in mind. I definitely want to make a site which doesn't require the user to have Flash. I'm probably going to keep the color scheme for some long buttons but have an unobtrusive background colour. And thanks for that link Acrylic, it's exactly what I've been looking for.

From using both several versions of Windows up to 7, several Linux distros and a couple of Mac OSes. My opinion is that Macs offer absolutely nothing over cheaper PCs, I believe they are overpriced for no reason. The only reason people buy Macs is because of the advertising and I haven't seen evidence of a single reason suggesting otherwise. Mac does have a whole bunch of decent software pre-installed, however. So you shouldn't need to download much. I'd say, since you're on webdesignerforum.co.uk, get yourself a copy of Adobe Creative Suite, or at least a trial of Photoshop, Dreamweaver or Flash or something. Probably get Open Office as well, while you're at it.

It could be interference from other electrical devices, it could be that your batteries just need replacing or it could be just a fault in wireless devices. Wireless devices are often like that.

I'm shocked that your insurance company would give you vouchers instead of real money. I'd say build your own computer rather than getting an overpriced mac. You'll only need about £500 to get the best computer you could want, if you spent the entire £1225 you could probably build a computer powerful enough to demolish small african villages.

I can tell you how the first image is made. It's simply two pictures, one being the squares which you can erase in the center slightly to reveal the second picture below it. You can apply this concept to you image and experiment with smooth erasing/masks and blending styles.

You're best off doing it yourself so you get the practice you really need. Getting someone else to do it doesn't benefit you in anyway whatsoever

I just found this forum on google and it's great. I'm 17 year old who knows nothing of the world but I've been designing for about two thirds of my life. Hopefully I will be able to obtain many sexy women and drugs with the money I make from web designing, although I'm afraid I probably won't be able to compete with all you proffesionals.
