December 7, 201015 yr OK, so i have bought myself a new imac. i havent used a mac in about 8 years so i have to get my head around it!!! are there any apps or anything that are a must download? also, are all the apps free? does it work the same as an iphone where ya download from itunes or whats the story? Am in work now but cant wait to get home to start messin around with it!

December 7, 201015 yr I'm not a designer, so I don't really use my mac for design work (its only used for browser testing) but TextMate is good (but commercial) for editing files, Dropbox is worth getting, get NetBeans or Eclipse for coding. I don't think iTunes is bundled with osx so you'll need to download that.
December 7, 201015 yr ITunes is bundled with it. Textmate will do a better job at editing coding that netbeans or eclipse. No not all the apps are free. That's like asking if all the apps on windows is free. Speaking of which there is no need to partion your computer to install Windows unless there is an express reason to do so... And kinda defeats the purpose of getting a new mac computer. Apps for the mac are not sold through iTunes yet though there will be a service like that with the next os release. Apps are sold the same way as on windows either at the store or online. Whats apps tqo get partly depends on what you like to do and what your needs are. So why don't you tell us a little about that so we can make some recommendations.

I mainly bought it for designing for web on it. i have 'acquired' CS5 so need to install that. i suppose i'll also be using it to look at films n ****. ya know yourself. just the normal stuff. i suppose im lookin for stuff that will make my life that little bit easier as well as makin me say to myself "no way, thats fairly cool"

December 7, 201015 yr From using both several versions of Windows up to 7, several Linux distros and a couple of Mac OSes. My opinion is that Macs offer absolutely nothing over cheaper PCs, I believe they are overpriced for no reason. The only reason people buy Macs is because of the advertising and I haven't seen evidence of a single reason suggesting otherwise. Mac does have a whole bunch of decent software pre-installed, however. So you shouldn't need to download much. I'd say, since you're on webdesignerforum.co.uk, get yourself a copy of Adobe Creative Suite, or at least a trial of Photoshop, Dreamweaver or Flash or something. Probably get Open Office as well, while you're at it.

No need to spend money on that awful software. if you really need that kind of software, use OpenOffice or NeoOffice. Its free and can open/save into MS format. The good software that I use is iShowU HD Pro for screen recordings Transmit for FTP Skype Adium MAMP VirtualHostX (easy enough to do it by hand, but why bother). Textmate Evernote FontExplorerX (really good free font manager if you can find it, they have discontinued it). OmniDazzle Steam RipIt Art Directors Toolkit Tweetie Adobe Kuler (Air app)

I know I will have to buy some new software aswell (Adobe Suite etc) but if it's worth the move Im all for it!
December 8, 201015 yr For design/web work some of the best apps (a few already mentioned) - Coda Espresso CSSEdit Transmit Office for Mac (been slated here, but surprisingly good..a Apple/Microsoft collab, so not as bad as it could have been!) VirtualBox (run Windows inside of Mac instead of that Dual-Boot shenanigins) ...erm and lots of other stuff too!
