  1. @Shaney - Used Arras Theme as a base, wanted the built in flexibility of the front page options, but have tweaked a fair bit of the code and replaced some of the images. Who wants to re-invent the wheel - No shame in that is there? @bocaj - indeed it is becoming ever more evident that I'll be changing that when I work on it
  2. Just to clarify in case there's confusion, the logo which I intend to keep is not dependant on the layout of the header. These are 2 separate things. My logo is also in my footer. The brand guidelines I've drawn up for the 'design-is' logo allow it to be used in a number of ways (not many, however, but a few). I happen to be fine with my logo and haven't received negative feedback about it from anyone else. In my view I simply need to re-work the header colours and layout. Most probably bringing it more in line with what it was formerly to try and give it some more impact as suggested by smoothonline. This is what people are pointing out to me, not that there's a problem with the logo, but the situation I've placed it in.
  3. Thanks for your efforts James, very much appreciated! I have a load of business cards left, so for brand consistency if nothing else I'll be keeping the logo as is for the time being. Though I agree about the colours to a certain extent. I'll add that to my notes for when I get to fiddle with it Cheers /Doug
  4. Thanks James. I'm on Firefox 3 and all lines up OK (on Safari as well) so must be IE - will investigate when I get home and can load up VMware. 'What problem' doesn't line up though... didn't think of that - will add this to amendment list
  5. Thanks for all your comments! Very much appreciated in reply: @smoothonline - I agree about the logo being lost. The header is the main issue with the new one. A similar design to my old one with a smoother finish was my original thought, but I was never quite happy with the look and feel so wanted to move away completely from the older site. May revisit in future renditions... @Shaney, Dizi, pereira, verawolf - Thanks for compliments Will probably rethink the header design. Seems to be the main issue people have with the site. @scifunk - Thanks, clean and fresh was part of the aim! #1 & #3 - header definitely needs work. #2 Not sure which ones you mean. I tried to get things to align (mostly). Which browser are you using? Could you provide screeny? @Paul Millar - Didn't know about this... I'll look into it further, thanks! The meta is pretty much stuff I've carried over from the last 5ish versions of my online portfolio etc... haven't given it much thought recently ( ) Thanks everyone! Keep it coming if there's more comments please... Not sure when I'll have time to fiddle with it, but I definitely will take everything mentioned into account when I do! Thanks again, /Doug
  6. Hi all, I'm fairly new here. Hoping to learn a lot and help others in return First off, I'd love to hear opinions of my site for freelance stuff. I know it's got some errors and some downfalls, but rather than list them and explain bits or make excuses, I'd rather hear what you guys think think straight off. Oh, and here's my old version for comparison if anyone cares. Please feel free to criticise, but also, please be constructive! If you don't like it, say why and what you would improve. Unhelpful comments not needed thanks Thanks in advance! /Doug
  7. I much prefer it to the former Good job!

Hi all I'm re-visiting a site I put together a while ago which might finally go live. I'm trying to get most of bugs out, but have a bit of a problem on IE 6 & 7 on the gallery pages (http://www.designbybluecow.co.uk/united-kingdom/gallery/) where the navigation on the right affects the thumbnails. The code is a bit messy as I adapted a WordPress theme in a rather rough and ready way, for which I apologise I'm a bit brain fried and can't seem to get my head around a fix for the bug shown and would be very grateful for any help! Cheers /Doug
  10. Sorry, seems I'm not conveying what I mean very well. Afraid I can't post a link, site is in development and client wants it private until ready. Whilst typing this reply. I've realised that I'm barking up the wrong tree anyway! lol Thanks for trying I've not got my head screwed on straight today.
  11. Hi all, I can't seem to find one, but I'm sure there must be a plugin to have a widget which displays posts from current category only. If anyone knows of one, could you point me in the right direction? Cheers /Doug
  12. OK, posting again rather than editing because I've come to a solution. Thought I'd post my way around my problem in case it's useful to anyone... I'm using a plugin called Page Excerpt to let me add excerpts to pages and using: <?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?> <div id="total"> <?php the_excerpt(); ?> </div> <?php endwhile; endif; ?> I have added the excerpts where I want them and styled as I see fit. When it comes to editing them all at once rather than going through page at a time, I've gone about it a bit backwards, but it works. Using this Search and Replace plugin, we can easily change the relevant amounts when needed throughout the excerpts only. So, maybe not the best solution, but it works until we find something better! Cheers for advice / pointers! /Doug
  13. Thanks Jmz - looks like a possible solution. I'm hoping to find a solution to have 1 location to update these amounts and then they would show on the appropriate page. So I could put the UK total raised in one box somewhere and this would appear say at the top right of the UK page and all its sub-pages (except the red nose day one). I'll explain further. Here is the page hierarchy with the totals that need to be on each (and and the ones below until a new one is mentioned): # Home - Worldwide Total # About Us # Contact Us # Fundraising # Governance # Press # Privacy Policy # Site Map # Terms and Conditions # Trustees # United Kingdom - UK Total * Charity Focus * Trader Focus * Gallery * Red Nose Day - Red Nose Day Total o Corporate Activities o Gallery # United States - US Total * Charity Focus * Trader Focus * Gallery # Australia - AUS Total * Charity Focus * Trader Focus * Gallery * Bushfire Appeal - Bushfire Appeal Total o Activity o Our Appeal # New Zealand - NZ Total * Charity Focus * Trader Focus * Gallery # France - FR Total * Charity Focus Could I create a page and hide it from the navigation and somehow pull the content to display on the appropriate pages somehow do you think? Having trouble getting my head around it lol I'll have a good look into 'More Fields' Thanks for advice so far! All further ideas welcome! /Doug -EDIT- OK, so, More Fields looks good in the way that I can put a box which lets me choose options on the pages edit area, but I'm not sure how to make those options mean anything. I now have a box which lets me choose which total to put on a page, but I don't know how to make it do anything with anything lol - I think I'm missing something important...
  14. Thanks for replying Zinc I posted the question there, but haven't had much luck with responses yet unfortunately. Meanwhile I'm continuing my plguin search... Any further advice would be much appreciated! Cheers /Doug
  15. Hi all I have another request for advice on WordPress... I need to be able to show a small amount of text on all pages, but depending on which page I'm on, the text needs to be different. It's a charity website, with areas for different countries, each with their own set of sub pages. I need to display an amount raised for each country on the countries home page and sub pages. Is there any way anyone can think of doing this? Widgets, plugins, coding? Thanks in advance for any help! /Doug
  16. Thanks for the help! I had a fiddle based on your advice, but came across a plugin: http://srinig.com/wordpress/plugins/flexi-...omment-page-22/ This seems to do the trick perfectly! /Doug
  17. No problem, thanks for trying I also investigated a plugin call Collapsible Pages, which was good, but got confused with my page ordering, so ruled itself out as my solution.
  18. Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't really want a separate menu, I just want the sub pages to appear (or not) depending on if you are currently on the parent or a sub page of the same set. i.e. I only want to see the Red Nose Day sub pages menu, when I'm on United Kingdom > Red Nose Day or a sub page of Red Nose Day for example. Any ideas on modifying the current code or another Widget? ( I have already looked and not found a widget, but you [someone] may know of a different one? )
  19. Hi all I have little experience in the back end of WordPress and have come across a problem I can't seem to solve with widgets and or plugins. I'm trying to make it so that sub pages only show in the navigation list when I'm on a parent page or one of the sub pages that shares the same parent page. Can anyone point me in the right direction on what to change or add? I have this code at the moment (from the template I'm adapting): <div id="menu"> <?php $pages = get_pages(); //print_r($pages); //list_pages_by_category(0, true, true, '', '<br/>', '<br/>', true, false, false); ?> <ul class='pagelist'> <li class='pagecat'><br/><br/> <ul class='pagemain'> <?php if ( !function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') || !dynamic_sidebar() ) : ?> <li><a href="<?php bloginfo('url'); ?>" <?php if (is_home()) echo " class=\"selected\""; ?> title="<?php bloginfo('name')?>: Startpage" >Home</a> </li> <?php $parent = ''; /* if(is_home()) { $parent = '&depth=1'; } else { $parent = '&child_of=' . $post->ID; } */ wp_list_pages('title_li=&sort_column=menu_order'); ?> <?php endif; ?> </ul> </li> </ul> </div> Thanks in advance for any help you can offer... /Doug
  20. When you group the pseudo-classes (a:link, a:visitied...) does active still need to come below hover? Or could you do for example: a:link, a:visited, a:active { stuff } a:hover { stuff } Cheers, /Doug
  21. Welcome I'm new too & have already found this a great, welcoming community.
  22. Thanks @Gareth... you glossed over my question here Anyone else able to clarify? @Helen - Love your site!
  23. Just to add on with a follow-up question... when you group the pseudo-classes (a:link, a:visitied...) does active still need to come below hover? Or could you do for example: a:link, a:visited, a:active { color: #564b47; text-decoration: none; } a:hover { color: #ccccaa; text-decoration: none; } Cheers, /Doug
  24. Cheers I have learnt a lot since building those (tables for newsletter sign up and contact forms are from outside sources), and hope to introduce fixes at some point, but time is always a factor lol I look forward to becoming a member of the community here and improving ten fold, it looks like it's a great place to be!
