£200 = 5-10 hours of work. I could've done a much better design and still coded it in fully valid and semantic code in that time.

Nine days have passed my friend. The site's still using tables and excessive slices. What's the hold-up? Is the recoding taking longer than expected?

I've been doing a little recoding of my own, sorry about that. It's not completly finished yet, but it works on Firefox, Opera, Ie7 and Safari. I think it might have some bugs in Ie6, but I probably know how to fix them too without too many hacks. http://2dropsdesign.com/

Thanks Sono.. I understand you might have been busy with the new design for your site.

Maybe the original designer realised he/she quoted far too little for the work and just rushed the site out the door? Hence the poor image optimisation, code lack of testing etc.

 

£200 to cover the prep, design, coding, client amends, testing, upload, project management is ridiculously low.

 

Bulldog. Was this a UK designer or contracted from overseas?

 

I sometimes wonder why us web designers / developers do our best to talk down and discount our skills. Accountants, Lawyers, Dentists, Doctors etc always talk up what they do and in doing so and ensure their prices remain high.

 

I guess it's down to the non-existent barriers of entry. Anyone with a laptop and a copy of M$ Publisher thinks they can call themselves a designer.

 

And as to top the comments that design is overrated/priced. Try telling that to the boys and gals busy designing the new Iphone and Macbooks....

My 2cents is "You get what you pay for" If you want quality you pay for if your budget it 300-400$ you get what you pay for, also always check out the portfolio of the person you higher to see what level of product you will be getting.

Fair enough 5 hours to code that is enough, but I guess it was designed first, meetings to find out what the client wanted, copy etc. For £200 it is a reasonable site and it loads at a decent speed for anyone who is not up a mountain or on a dial up modem...

It certainly loads faster, but it has lost some of its good looks in the transformation from tables to CSS. Also, the misspelling of 'Copyright' in the footer doesn't give a great impression for a website revolving around education.
