It's all about the bear. See how it follows him, and changes expression? There is definitely no ROI in terms of time spent - but I just love this kind of thing, especially compared to most sites now where content is buried behind ads and auto-playing videos!

Well duh! I didn't even see that.

Suppose it all depends on what sort of sites you visit! I use all sorts of blockers so don't get tracked and haven't seen an advert in years.

I like very simple clean sites. No animation, no lazy load, no dark backgrounds and font big enough you can read.

I've only got one site that's just html/css. Been around since forever and still very popular:
