Apologies in advance for the newbie questions!

I designed my website some time ago, mostly not knowing what I am doing. I used a template and adapted it for my use using Adobe Dreamweaver which is very old now.  I need to update my website and I was wondering if using another web design software would complicate things? If I use a newer web editor, will it update the code to make it compatible with current browsers? Which website editor would you recommend?

Am I right in thinking that Wix and WordPress employ a subscription model with a monthly fee? I'm already paying for a hosting plan and for my domain so don't want to pay again

WordPress doesn't, unless you actually host your site with them on WordPress.com (their commercial arm). Otherwise, WordPress is free. Wix, Weebly, Squarespace and the other easy website builders all charge subscription fees. It would cost you more and you'd get fewer options so we'd never recommend going with them.

My webhost inMotion has a WordPress installer built in. It is asking me about plugins to install and I have no idea what these plugins are or what they do. Which plugins should i choose? or Am i better off installing it manually following the instructions on WordPress.org?

Right now you don’t need any of them.

complete the install and worry about plugins later.

The key thing is to start creating content. Get all your pages written then play with menus.
