Help a non-designer back to html

Featured Replies

Background - I like writing code but am not a web deisgner.  I created an html website about 7 years ago.  About 3 years ago I kept being told off by google for it not being mobile friendly.  Decided, after njumerous recomendations, to recreate it in wordpress.  Google was happy.  I am not.  I found it easy to create what I wanted in wp but I hate all the reliance on 3rd party elements and constant updates.  I don't feel in control.  I once made a tiny typo in the functions.php file and it brought down the entire website - not just a page, but the whole flippin thing.  Also had a couple of updates to plugins that have caused me issues.

So, I am thinking of going back to html.  It is a fairly static site but I like writing little bits of php/js in the background but nothing major.  I have seen some pretty good resposive templates which I can work with to create what I need.

My confusion is that after an awful lot of searching, I can find nothing about transitioning from wp to html.  It's very much a one way street the other way.  That makes me doubt it is a good idea.

Advice please?

Hmm, I never heard about transition from wp to html.  I don't think you can do that. wp contains lots of php and css. You can maybe look for the source code and copied in Dreamweaver. (will help you alot in design). If you know a little HTML and CSS might get the same design as in wp. Good luck!

What do you think about my website:   www.myhomesmartech.co.uk

Please, don't buy anything, as is just a uni project.

Thanks!

@PPMark it depends on how big the site. If it’s just a few pages you can export all your pages to xml and then convert is to a set of html pages.

But a well built Wordpress site doesn’t need third party elements nor does it need constant updating.

As to the typo in functions.php, it will bring down the whole site because that’s just about the first file your theme reads. php will let you know about errors if debugging is enabled but it will fail.

Which is why it never a good idea to edit theme files on a live site.

I perhaps should have been clearer. I am able to recreate the site in html, I don’t need to export it.  It will be more things like getting the page structure, naming, Seo right so google doesn’t get too upset. I thought there might be some useful tips in doing that. My query is I can find nothing which makes me think I’m going the wrong way.

Google isn’t too fussed about the structure and naming. It’s the content, internal linking, calls to action, trustmarks and citations that Google is looking for.

Read the Google SEO guidelines, they tell you all you need to know.

But I still think there is something wrong with your WP configuration. I don’t have any of the issues you are experiencing.
