SEO and google cheats.

Featured Replies

Hello all,

My name is Humberto, I am from Spain.

I am starting to make websites, using Wordpress mostly.

I do some PHP and Angular, still learning but I am getting better everyday.

My big concern has to do with wondering how do they do it to be able to show on google results even with words that are not on the web.

Example: when you type something like "unlock phones in london" and some of the results are from generic sites that not even are in the UK.

Beste regards

All this means is they are better at SEO than you are.

They are probably using all sorts of black hat techniques so unless you are prepared to go down this path or have the funds, time and commitment to get your site ranked using legitimate means then you aren't going to be able to compete.

Yes, they surely are better at SEO than me, that is a fact that cannot be deny :)

Like creating a subdomain with a common search word as in: free-wifi.whateverblog.com or all those sites full of warez.

I know that google doesn't use the meta-tags anymore to do the indexing, but where should I put all the tags needed to be able, as a business not a blog, to show as high as you can on the search engines.

If I have a local phone repair shop in my town (Denia), why is it that when you search on google for "phone repair in Denia" some obscure repair shop (or an indian unlock website) shows up higher than mine?

That is why I am in this forum, I want to learn all the white hat, red hat, blue hat, black hat, grey hat techniques, where to find them and having a place I can come to ask for help and sometimes help someone as much as I can.

regards,

Hi hugmax,

Just to cover your example;

Example: when you type something like "unlock phones in london" and some of the results are from generic sites that not even are in the UK.

So just checking you understand that search results are not always the same using the same term. Things like your geographic location, search history and other witchcraft variables are blended to produce the results.

With your example I ran the search incognito with the following results, i've made notes as to rough guess reason for inclusion.

  • Yelp (1st & 2nd) - Like Yell etc business geographic data sets often get high backlinks combined with volume of listings. Their method of SEO is simply sinking a search term fishing line into a locations pool, loads of pages of service x location e.g. 'phone unlocking' in/near 'town name'. Note 1st is find_desc=unlock+phone and 2nd is search?find_desc=Unlock+Iphone, both are phones, both use find_loc=London and their results are all in London; the difference is iphone gets second as the search term was not exact brand specific.
  • Money.co.uk (3rd) - With the term 'unlock phones' you might want to do it yourself. /how-to-unlock-your-mobile-phone.htm is how to do it. As for London, well you don't need to be in London to follow the guide but the owner of money.co.uk is registered in the UK and deal with UK matters.
  • Yell (4th) - Same reason as Yelp.
  • Gumtree (5th & 6th) - Same reason as Yelp, again double result with iphone lower position.
  • fonefunshop.co.uk (7th) - The underdog, but UK company selling / providing unlock codes for phones.
  • amazon.co.uk (8th) - The mighty amazon with more backlinks and authority than most sites would ever dream of. Their page is a collection of unlocked phones ready to go on any tariff. Just like Money.co.uk the intent might be to replace your phone rather than unlock it.
  • telegraph.co.uk (9th) - Search engines love a bit of news, here we have a UK paper talking about Ofcom etc, big block of article text from a high authority.
  • kijiji.ca (10th) - Yep, here's the SEO pickle, when 2 places have the same name. Since you didn't state which London you wanted we get a 'London' in Ontario, Canada. Again, service based site for unlocking phones.

But, don't forget this is a simple human view as to why these results are the way they are, there's magic and wizards involved i'm sure.

Research, research, research.

SEO isn't difficult it just takes years to learn, practice and refine all the techniques. And it's not something you can just do once, you need to keep learning, testing and experimenting.

It's got nothing to do with tags. It's all about the content and navigation on the site, how you channel information flows, build trust and lead Google to beleive you deserve to rank #1 for your chosen keywords.

Not sure why you think the top result is an obscure business. The page I looked at has some great results full of local businesses.

It's got nothing to do with tags. It's all about the content and navigation on the site, how you channel information flows, build trust and lead Google to beleive you deserve to rank #1 for your chosen keywords.

Totally. Point to always remember is SEO = search engine optimisation, it's not a standalone product or bolt on afterthought, it's a process which is part of design, development and content, from initial planning to launch and beyond, all areas require optimisation. Imagine if a car manufacturer treated safety as some people treat SEO, built a bunch of cars and then thought 'we need to make this safe' when the seats are made of flammable materials and the petrol tank is just a bucket with a straw lol

I made my search using: "reparar movil en ondara" and "reparar movil en denia"

In both of those searches I got: www.moviles-reparacion-alicante.org.es/reparaciones/calle-denia-tecnicos-tablets-alica...

and also: www.moviles-reparacion-alicante.org.es/reparaciones/calle-ondara-tecnicos-tablets-alica...

Are you telling me that someone made those pages? or is it a template where they input the name of every spanish city (via php)?

Those guys at www.moviles-reparacion-alicante.org.es are doing some work to be at the top on both searches when they are at 110Kms from here.

Recon I need to work harder to rank better.

regards

Sorry to say I can't read Spanish and I've only ever been to Barcelona :) Here's my google translate attempt at the url;

mobile-repair-alicante.org.es/repairs/street-denia-technical-tablets...

.es works like .co.uk or .uk, geo based domain and I presume it's a webhost in Spain. Alicante and Denia I see are cities, so the UK equivalent would be say Liverpool and Manchester?

It's not uncommon to section cities under say a coverage / service area and have a page on each area; for example domain.es/mobile-repairs/alicante and domain.es/mobile-repairs/denia. Always better to use hierarchy structure than sub domains as a sub domain is treated as a separate website rather than a child page of one website.

Are you telling me that someone made those pages? or is it a template where they input the name of every spanish city (via php)?

All you need is a geo-database (e.g. cities of spain) and a strong template. You can produce content for those specific areas, all database driven however time consuming, if you don't mind effort then it's worth looking into however if you only work in one city then focus there and think about local towns close to the city or regions in the city e.g. Westminster in London.

When you ran these tests were they incognito? Was it google.es?

Recon I need to work harder to rank better.

You need to spend the next few months learning how Google ranks pages and start to apply this to your site.

There are no quick fixes. If you get it wrong you can upset Google and end up with a penalty. So it might be quicker and cheaper to focus on 'Google My Business', adwords and other forms of marketing.

For example, keep an eye out on FB, twitter and other social media channels for people in your area who have cracked their screen, or lost a charger or whatever.

Yes I ran the search incognito on google.es

My point is that the first 3 results are from the same domain, and it is not even local.

Thanks for all the answers, I know that works has to be done, and SEO is not a "thing" it is a method, a way of doing things.

BTW, my web ranks at 4th on most local searches, I get mad when some web from 101kms ranks better than me :(.

thanks you all,
