I have been reading today trying to establish what is the definition of a front end developer and a back end developer.

Seems to me both have started to merge in a way and front end developers are also expected to have typical "back end" skills, working with server, apps, database?

 

Am I missing something? What are your thoughts?

Yep there's no hard and fast boundaries with job descriptions, and the roles of any one description will vary across employers!

 

As far as I envisage things a "front end" developer is responsible for putting together a site and that does involve working with directly related subjects such as server/databases, UX, SEO, marketing and the rest of it.

You are right, these days it seems that both started to merge and there are higher expectations from a front end developer. I agree that basic back end skills are bonus but I don't think it is a good idea to ditch the back end developer's job and load everything on front end developer.

 

It might be alright with basic projects for a front end developer to handle both sides but for more complex projects front end and back end must not merge I think.

Whilst we are working in a client - server environment, I dont really see the confusion at all really... client devs work on client side development - HTML, CSS, javascript (if the organization allows, this could be split into a web designer vs client developer) vs server side devs working on server side code... php, java, nodejs etc
