March 19, 201511 yr I want to know how to use canonical tag and why we use it on all web pages. Please let me know the procedure too so i could implement on my website.
June 24, 201511 yr Canonical tag-used to describe when multiple pages have very similar content. Canonical tag is used to prevent the duplicate content in your website. It is added in head tag on your webpage.
July 8, 201511 yr We use canonical tags to avoid duplication. Lets take an example. Take a website ABC.com This website open if we enter- 1) www.ABC.com 2) http://www.ABC.com 3)www.ABC.com/index.php All three domains are pointing to one domain. Search Engine consider these pages are duplicate pages. To avoid this, specify canonical=www.ABC.com on your home page code and in between <head>..</head> Edited July 15, 201511 yr by teodora
July 8, 201511 yr Canonical tag-used to describe when multiple pages have very similar content. This is the prime use for canonical, however... We use canonical tags to avoid duplication. Search Engine consider these pages are duplicate pages. To avoid this, specify canonical=www.ABC.com on your home page code and in between <head>..</head> This 'could' use a canonical tag but remember that canonical doesn't pass link juice. In this situation you're far better to check the url and 301 if required to the correct path e.g. if the url is http://www.abc.co.uk/index.php then it should 301 to http://www.abc.com/ thus passing link juice over for anyone linking the index.php page. Secondly by tightening the structure you have saved multiple crawls down paths that shouldn't really exist and finally /index.php shouldn't be required, you can call any file as the directory index with htaccess saving this whole problem.

I still have doubts about canonical tags and link juice, canonical can be used like an alternative of 301 in some occasions, but what does it really tell search engines? it doesnt pass link juice at all?
July 10, 201511 yr I still have doubts about canonical tags and link juice, canonical can be used like an alternative of 301 in some occasions, but what does it really tell search engines? it doesnt pass link juice at all? Not that i'm aware of; canonical as far as i'm aware says "hey, my url might not be the same as this page over here, but i'm really the same page" whereas 301 says "this url is wrong, here's the page you wanted". Canonical Example Red Womens High Heels yourdomain.com/products/shoes/women/red/310/ But what if the products was on sale or also appeared under filter categories like... yourdomain.com/offers/womens-shoes/310/ yourdomain.com/products/high-heels/310/ This would be a prime time to make the canonical on these two other paths above to the true path yourdomain.com/products/shoes/women/red/310/. But what happens with ... yourdomain.com/PRoducts/SHOEs/wOMen/rED/310/ yourdomain.com/products.php?cat=products&typ=shoes&sex=women&colour=red&id=310 These are a prime time for 301 to yourdomain.com/products/shoes/women/red/310/ as you know the page should exist but not on the path it's currently on. July 17, 201511 yr Question, I ran my site (root url) through SEOSiteCheckup.com (88% optimization btw) and received the following messages regarding this subject: "url canoncilization: http://www.url.com and http://url.com resolve to the same url." I am told this is good. Green light. but in a separate area of the same test... "Your webpage is using the canonical link tag. This means that your webpage is not the preferred one to use in the search results. How to fix:" The Canonical Link Tag can be used when there are several pages with similar content and you want to tell the search engines which page you prefer to use in the search results. If your webpage does not have duplicate content and it has the preferred URL you must remove the canonical link tag. I am using an htaccess file for 301 redirect and I am telling GWT that the www version of my site is the preferred url. Am I NOT suppose to use both 301 and canonical tags? I just remember this error before. Edited July 17, 201511 yr by RobertS
July 25, 201511 yr hello canonical tags are inserted between the head tags of your page and it helps the search engine to find out which content is duplicated and which are unique,
