Made a site. Can you give design tips for the future?

Hello,

Recently I made a website of an electronic music band for a school project. I'm planning to make more websites in the future, so I would like to know what you think of it. Many thanks!

Hey Phaser1,

I give it a thumbs up for layout and the way it works. Personally I'd rethink that light blue colour. Although it looks better with a yellow button showing.

I know we are all different, so it's all relative, but I just copied the page screenshot in Fireworks and replace that blue with white or any other colour sampled from the page, and other colours really look better in my opinion. I tried a few and yellow FFF645 sampled from the W in the mess with us button, looks good in my opinion.

Having said that, me and my girlfriend both have different monitors and sites often look very different from a colour perspective. What one person sees is often different, regardless of taste.

Good job, they look like a cool and fun band. I just don't like that light blue. Maybe it's just my monitor.

I'm no pro of course, so hopefully others will chime in.

Actually, it grows on you after a while. My yellow might have been a hasty idea (I do get excited, but I'm design challenged), because it also depends on your browser and other windows frame colours, which might not match the site. However, that light blue doesn't seem to match anything in the above picture/banner, which is why it might not seem to blend, at least for me.

I wonder what others will say, Maybe they love that blue..

Thank you for the time you took to review :) You're absolutely right about the different color impressions on different screens. I even noticed that blue especially is a very difficult color for screens. But I chose it because then I had a triad of colors.

I also noticed that on very high resolution screens, the black bar where the banner fades out becomes a bit disturbing.

But you made an interesting point about the banner itself not having a blue color in it. That's something to keep in mind.

The bad

The colours are a total no no, they do not go together at all

The layout is crowded

The typography is poor

The arrows are very "90's"

Photo/video page is very crowded, not organised well at all

Nothing stands out and says "this is important", there is far too much to read.

The good

There are a few pages though despite the horrible menu that do come through as good,

tour dates table, simple and easy to read

Tour dates > date nice image on the left, good layout just a but too much text

Like the timeline on biography, I would play with that more

Contact page is nice

Music page is simple for quick view

I like the fact you have not used silly unnessasary junk, like shadows etc, it helps make the design seem just a tiny bit more up to date

The advice

Look into colour theory, look around for typography and font ideas and find other websites like what you are trying to achieve there and grab some layout ideas, look a little deeper into why space is important, also try to make it a little less 'boxy'

Ps. If you are seeing drastically different colours on different computers then chances are you need to calibrate your monitors or screens.

Thanks for the feedback! It seems like you have a lot of experience. Do you have a portfolio or something that I could check out? :)

I have some design experience in general but I have just completed my second year of uni ( web design and graphic degree) the only stuff I have online at the moment is my incomplete website http://mentiondesign.com and my stuff on devientart (mostly photomanipulation) http://saltedm8.deviantart.com

Actually I'm in the process of considering scrapping it, found someone to work with in business and would probebly prefer to create something between is rather than on my own, but thanks
