My Website

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have done the 1st page of my portfolio website and just wondered if you guys could use your well trained eyes to spot any problems, criticism is welcome.

A second point is to do with my navigation, I have a small one at the bottom but should I put one in near the top somewhere, if so, where?

http://www.miga-designs.co.uk/miga.html

Cheers,

Michael

As regards, the top navigation, I would put it above the 'miga' logo, on the left hand side.

good work...

but just think in usability, your navigation menu should be on top.

Bests

I think this is going to be a nice site, but I can see room for improvement also. You've already identified that the menu needs to come nearer to the top of the page. Definitely do that. I also think your shadow/ reflection effect on the header is too extreme - maybe try turning it down a little. You also have a drop shadow around your main content which stops about a third of the way down. This needs to be extended.

I like your typography - the content is clear and easy to read, but I'm not sure about the font you have used for the text in the speech bubble. TBH I'm not that keen on the speech bubble at all. It breaks up the flow of your design IMO.

The only other thing I wonder about is whether I like your header image centred... It may look more balanced if you aligned it to the left? Maybe have a play with that.

Your code is lovely and tidy though - good work.

Here are 7 things I have to say about your site.

1. I cant say I am into the beveled 3D efects that much and I think they look a bit tacky. The Black highlight of th text of the star also looks silly. But I guess this is the theme youare using so dont mind me.

2. I think the header is too big and should be scaled down, put to the left and with a design acopanying (cant spell <<) it.

3. The Nav should be inline with the white space of the main page.

4. Using Green text and underline for the bold looks a bit silly, is poor coding and is too simmilar to the links at the bottom.

5. You need to do something to "jazz up" the sub headers.

6. I hope you change the Link names from file///D:/ to the proper link names when you make the real thing.

7. Well done on the validated coding.

I can't really say I like what's going on there. The blue spiked thingy looks bad.. especially since you have it on the website 3 times and each of them look different (texture, glow, color, length/width of spikes). The reflection effect of "Miga Designs" is overused and not very well executed. The green in the navbar and the 3 links looks out of place. You have outer glow around the top of the content but then it stops half-way through.

Tu che gdehms. I am in the process of altering my header, the outer glow you speak of will be addressed at that time.

How about aligning the logo to the left, and having the top navigation vertically to the right, with a right align on the text.

Would make the nav a bit more interesting at least.

Not too sure about that "Thanks for visiting" strap beneath the footer either. Makes the bottom of the page look very crowded, and drowns out the footer text.

Also, not sure if this is just in Safari, but the outer glow on the main content box stops level with where it says "Michael Gainford" in the first paragraph.

1. Altered to something which I hope it low on your tack-o-meter!

2. Do you? (suggestion noted)

3. Yes OK

4. Poor coding? How did you work that out?

5. Sub-Headers, but why?

6. Obviously!!!!

7. Thank You (Even though you previously had said I poorly coded the sub headers!!

I know you stated above that you're working on the header, but in case you're planing to keep the reflection, id like to point out that it is visually incorrect. The text is merely horizontally reflected and faded out at the bottom, a real reflection would have a change in perspective too. Having said that, the entire reflection looks poor and doesn't say much about design skills you might bring to a clients website. Additionally the emboss effect you have on the spiky thing looks like its taken directly out of Photoshop's preset.

I don't meant to sound harsh about that, but its disappointing to see such a poor graphic when really the rest of the site looks like its starting to be well organised.

Another few points are the black headings for "Affordable, semantic, personalised websites." and "Latest News" should probably be horizontally in line with each other.

Lastly, the graphic itself (the spiky blob thing) doesn't really appear to have any meaning with the rest of the site - it would be much better if the main graphic effect (say the spiky outline) was established throughout the text of "Miga Designs" - although if this was the case it might be better stay away from the embossed spikes.

My site www.miga-designs.co.uk looks horrific in Internet Explorer 6.

Anyone know what I would have to do / or can I be correctly pointed towards a way of rectifying this matter.

Thanks Guys.

Is this is what it is meant to look like? I qould guess not. This is using firefox 2....
