I have recently applied for an online marketing manager job to an IT business that sells sms solutions to businesses and they are to launch a new product. Well I have been in the online industry for many years as a web designer and an online marketing expert and led many successful marketing campaigns. Anyway, they shortlisted me for an interview.I arrived at the place and found myself talking to the marketing manager.Yes you heard it. After a few questions and answers it was clear to me that they were lying in their job listing and wanted to get someone with online marketing experience. Anyway, I spoke to this woman who had a marketing knowledge of a 10 year old and i wanted to share you some funny details of the conversation: me: As far as i see your web pages are not optimisied so I would start at the basics and get it search engine ready. them: no,no. In fact, they are so optimised that one tine they were even blocked by google. me:i would also revamp your website and implement landing pages per product that meets the current trends of design and markwting criteria. them:You're missing out on priorities.first we must drive customers in and when our traffic is high we can redo the homepage in a day or two me:you have no presence on social media sites. them:you mean facebook?It's only a lifestyle. me: *sigh* no, it's a business. me:so why did you put an advert on for an online marketing manager when you obviously looking for something else.You have been wasting my time. them:well you see it was a markering thing to drive in as many applicants as we can. The finalé: Well Rob, we think that you are too dynamic and innovative for our company so we have to say no(these were the exact words) so i said: your company is far from my standards too(*thinking* f... off)

One last remark on this and im donw with my offtopic ramble a single twitter widget written and minimised in raw JS = 31kb Full jquery lib minimised = 76kb Point is...if you create a feature rich website, which is pretty much a standard nowadays, you'll be using more than one script.

I agree, but how is using Jquery slower than using normal javascript. Jquery is a compact js library so how is it slower? It is basically a collection of general abstractions of common JS usages. You fire a function call to jquery and activate a code snippet from its source. The great advantage of using jquery is that - it already contains all the code snippets we use for cross browser javascript and it greatly...and I mean greatly speeds up design and development process. Not to talk about the extraordinary design that you can achieve with its effects. Think about a jquery slider and count the time how much it would take to build one with raw Js and with jquery. Plus if you think about it. Most of the times one snippet of complex JS script would add up in size to the full size of the jquery lib itself. Jquery is fast, lightweight, cross browser compliant and Css3 compliant. I'm not sure about the "helping" scripts you are talking about. Did you refer to JqueryUi? The OP only said that he'd drop jqueryUI and I agree with that...but not jquery. How does it get clunky? It increases load time? Your reasoning is flawed. Vendor specific extensions increases the CSS file by 1 line each...You could claim that they are not necessary but then you could also claim that css3 is not necessary because it has fewer functionalities so it loads faster. You said you have tried it and succeeded in creating a CSS3 effect with correct coding. Please share, because you know something most of us don't. I have always wanted to know how to replace -moz-box-shadow or -webkit-gradient with something easier to get a css3 effect. Please don't say "with JS" because then you contradict yourself

Let me interrupt you there for a sec. Jquery, not a fan? Try to build a site nowadays without jquery and you can say goodbye to stuff like, ajax validation, twitter feeds, various web services and of course nice animations made reaaaally easy. But I guess I shouldn't be telling this to an advanced web developer since i'm stating the obvious Browser specific CSS is completely fine and noone will question site validation if you use vendor specfic attributes. Ever tried to achieve drop shadow without using an image, or rounded corners? I suggest you do a bit of research on jquery and CSS standards nowadays.

You have some neatness going on here alright You need to enhance typography a bit. Headings are too small and not dragging attention. I would increase their size and use a different font (with @font-face or cufon). Also, it might be an idea to increase font size of the menu descriptions to 11px. You could add some depth to the pagination circles or be a little more creative with them. Button hover effects are too subtle. No visual indication that I am hovering the button. Input fields on the contact page feel too tight. I'd add a footer with various info so content would cover the full monitor size (assume a 1024 in height). This problem is present on the contact page. Spacing issues, but you already know those

So If I get this right, you posted their old website, which you will be changing to www.optogration.com? Seems like you have one hell of a ride with this client. If he "wants to remove all white spaces" and fill it up with images...lol www.optogration.com/index1.html doesn't exist. Could you post links to your concept to get you a better review? You kinda confused everyone here. Can you post your concept or mock up or whatever you have? BTW my points are still valid for www.optogration.com too

You've got some very cool ideas going on here. I second everything what Jasons said. I'd also implement some jquery hover efects since the visible state appears in an instant. IMO a smooth fade animation would soften it up.

Don't take it personally if I'm going to be a bit harsh on this one. General Colour scheme is very unappealing and boring The page lacks a well thought out visual hierarchy Vertical rhythm and overall typography are poorly executed (e.g line-height +inline style) Content layout is very unintuitive. There's no clear distinction between the parts you want to emphasise and those with less emphasis. Very messy coding with inline scripts and Css Inconsistent padding/spacing/margin sitewide Low quality images Submenu hover background is adjusting even after it had been opened (the list item has to be wider) Sometimes the menu text is not visible (eg. I2e avalanche photodiodes) Javascript issues (this has been mentioned by others but there's more) -> use a lightbox plugin on the chart, instead of a zoom. Links are very hard to be identified + How is this a html5/css3 site? For me, this site needs a proper design, because it hasn't got one yet. You should work on these areas if you want to get a proper website out there.
