June 12, 200818 yr Hey all, I'm finding that the average office chair really isn't doing my back any good, especially now I'm sitting down nearly the entire day. Nor is it doing my posture any favours. I've heard about the chairs that you effectively kneel on and how they can improve this situation. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with posture/lower back trouble and if you've had experience with the kneeling chairs? Are they worth it? I'm sure this affects quite a few web designers out there, don't be shy!
June 12, 200818 yr Not had any experience with kneeling chairs, but in my first long term office job, I was getting quite bad wrist and lower arm pain from my posture at the computer. This was cured by raising my monitor to eye level. It also made me sit up straight You could try that first?
June 12, 200818 yr damn straight... i personally find the whole chair business a nightmare.. i really do need a good chair (one of the most important parts of our day i reckon) but they are soooo expensive... and i mean £700
June 12, 200818 yr Author Well I have the monitor raised so it's at eye level, the desk is the right height and the chair is completely fiddle-with-able … I just can't seem to get comfortable in it. I've read that the kneeling chairs aren't great for prolonged sitting as they are a "forced posture". Basically what I'm really after is some good advice for a decent and comfortable chair that will remove pressure from my back and help improve my posture. I'm willing to go up to £250 for the right chair.
June 12, 200818 yr I'm on one now It's the better type though that 'rocks' rather than simply static (they're awful) Personally, I don't care for them too much and would gladly take my office chair, especially after a couple of hours. My Dad however swears by it and had had major back surgery, so I guess it's whatever you're comfortable in. I like to slouch really low, and I saw recently that it's actually better for your back to do that than to be bolt upright something like 135 from horizontal. I find that's a lot better than being 'nearly' upright.
June 12, 200818 yr The best chair I've found is the Aeron Chair by Herman Miller. A colleague managed to blag one as his office chair once and it was perfect. They normally go for more than your budget but you might get lucky on ebay.
June 13, 200818 yr Author I've seen those chairs when I did product design at Uni, they are beautiful! Not sure my budget can stretch to that yet, but it would definitely be one of the first things on my list in the future. Looks so comfy! Dusty, I heard about that. Apparently tilting your chair forward so it's over 90 degrees at the hip is actually better for you. I'm going to give it a go at work today – see if I can get comfortable for a change.
June 13, 200818 yr My old work place had the Aeron / dotcom chairs and personally I never got on with them. No idea why, but couldn't ever get really comfy. Although there are days and days of adjustments to play with, productivity took a dive for a while when they were delivered . I'm of the "if it's comfortable it's right" school of thought. I like to be nearly on my back if I could, but that looks a little odd in the office
June 13, 200818 yr I have used the kneeling chairs before.. and I have to say at first they seem odd then you get used to it and it makes you automatically correct your posture... then after a few hours your back hurts because its doing soo much work to keep a good posture.. over all I suggest a really nice chair. not a kneeling chair. There are those mesh chairs that offer great back support and feel good at the end of the day.. I have a bad back from an accident I was in years back and I am still in the worst fleshin chair ever.. but I have sat many hours in one of those expensive mesh chairs and I say if you can afford it.. or have room on a credit card then get one.. you will be doing your back a favor. Of course like most things.. individual results may vary!
June 13, 200818 yr Author Ooo interesting, I hadn't thought about leaning backwards to gain the right angle of the dangle! I'll er… "stretch"… at work today and see how it feels

June 13, 200818 yr Get a stool. Then you won't need to worry about what your back is doing. I'm not sure I have any helpful suggestions, other than put up with the pain.
June 13, 200818 yr Hi Rob, Have a look at this: http://www.viking-direct.co.uk/a%2Fbusines...RT-BK_Q26_p.htm Like yourself I am at my PC for a lot of the day - I have had one for a while and its really comfortable. The chair is designed for 'all day use'. They also do other posture correcting chairs etc as well. PS: No im not trying to advertise - they just make good chairs lol
June 14, 200818 yr Author Get a stool. Then you won't need to worry about what your back is doing. I'm not sure I have any helpful suggestions, other than put up with the pain. Thanks for the support! It's not the pain now that bothers me, it's the fact that many years of this could be bad for my health – the last thing I want is to be in agony when I'm older. Can you try Viking stuff or is it a buy it and hope for the best type thing? I don't really want to be sending back massive chairs because I couldn't try it out.
June 14, 200818 yr Hello You could try a swiss ball - good for posture, tightens the abs, you can bounce when your stressed and people can try to knock you off it. Might need a fur covered one, to avoid betty swollocks. Rob
June 15, 200818 yr If you order anything over the net/phone you should be able to return it in 14 days. Distance selling regulations, should be on their website somewhere.
June 17, 200818 yr aeron £215 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Aeron-Chair-B-size-b...1QQcmdZViewItem £103 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Superb-Black-HERMAN-...1QQcmdZViewItem
June 26, 200818 yr Rob I've used one a little. They're good for you back but a little hard on your legs a bit. but not too bad. I think it would be worth you trying out. Write a review on it in the review section. Maybe they won't take yours off like they did mine.
June 30, 200818 yr Not that I've read this entire tread, but place something under your desk to relax your legs on. A bass, a box or anything that makes your feet relaxed. Make sure the Keyboard are narrow you, and use CTRL + Scrolling wheel on you mouse to adjust text site while you are browsing. Then you won't lean towards your computer anymore.
June 30, 200818 yr I sat on one for the first time on Friday - they're AWSOME. I gots to get me one now
